Abstract: An analysis by means of using the estimation results of a modal choice model and the hedonic price regressions model is conducted in order to identify the effects of a subway line in Toronto on the values of housing units. The modal choice model is used for the estimation of the direct benefits from the improvement in transportation, and the hedonic price equations for the identification of subway effects on housing prices. Empirical results indicate that the direct savings in commuting costs have been capitalized into housing values.

TL;DR: In this paper, some of the currently popular qualitative tools of organizational research emphasizing the complementary nature of qualitative and quantitative approaches in most settings are discussed. But they do not discuss the relationship between the two approaches.
Abstract: Qualitative and quantitative approaches to the study of organizations are not mutually exclusive. Yet, over the last several years they have tended to become as such. Also, the interest in qualitative research of organizations seems to be renewing in the recent years. The present paper looks at some of the currently popular qualitative tools of organizational research emphasizing the complementary nature of qualitative and quantitative approaches in most settings.

TL;DR: In this paper, four pigeons were trained in a delayed conditional discrimination in which color and line cues jointly indicated trial outcome, and the results indicated that the birds relied upon the line as a cue to a greater extent when it was compounded with the color in advance of the retention interval than when it were presented after the RI.
Abstract: Four pigeons were trained in a delayed conditional discrimination in which color and line cues jointly indicated trial outcome. These were either combined in advance of a retention interval (RI) or separately presented before and after the RI. The former procedure resulted in less forgetting over the RI, the difference increasing with longer RIs. In a second study, the line cue was presented redundantly before and after the RI, and then selectively omitted from either temporal location during probe tests. In general, the results indicated that the birds relied upon the line as a cue to a greater extent when it was compounded with the color in advance of the RI than when it was presented after the RI. The data support an interpretation based on anticipatory processing in working memory, which leads to better retention than retrospective remembering.

TL;DR: The late tholeiitic lavas of southwestern Ubekendt Ejland (63-54 Ma) are intruded by lamprophyre dykes (∼33 Ma) as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The late tholeiitic lavas of southwestern Ubekendt Ejland (63-54 Ma) are intruded by lamprophyre dykes (∼33 Ma). The compositional and temporal differences would seem to preclude any genetic relationship between the two igneous episodes. Competing models of renewed partial melting versus extended batch fractionation are considered to explain the origin of the lamprophyres. Mathematically modelled lamprophyres produced by batch fractionation are very close to observed lamprophyre compositions and this, combined with other temporal and spatial evidence, suggests that renewed partial melting of the mantle is not the best way to explain such bimodal suites.

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed chronology is proposed using the paleomagnetic data which places the most voluminous volcanism in the mid-Pliocene epoch, and two new radiometric dates (2.1 and 3.9 Ma) show that the volcanism spans the Pliocene.
Abstract: The island of Aegma includes some of the oldest volcanic rocks in the south Hellenic Arc previous radiometric dates range from 3.87 to 4.4 Ma. The volcanic sequence is divided into nine units on the basis of field relations, petrography and geochemistry, and the characteristic paleomagnetic polarity of each unit has been determined. Two new radiometric dates (2.1 and 3.9 Ma) show that the volcanism spans the Pliocene. A detailed chronology is proposed using the paleomagnetic data which places the most voluminous volcanism in the mid Pliocene.

TL;DR: The Devono-Carboniferous volcanic rocks of Nova Scotia include Middle Devonian basalts from the McAras Brook Formation, Kiddle Devonian and Carboniferous basalts and rhyolites of the Fountain Lake Group as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The Devono-Carboniferous volcanic rocks of Nova Scotia include Middle Devonian basalts from the McAras Brook Formation in the northern Antigonlsh Highlands (Ballantynes Cove and McAras Brook areas), Kiddle Devonian and Carboniferous basalts and rhyolites of the Fountain Lake Group In the Cobequid Highlands and the Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous basalts and rhyolites of the Fisset Brook Formation in Cape Breton Island. The volcanic rocks were extruded upon the continental crust in an lntraplate setting. The basalts are tholelitic except those from Ballantynes Cove which are alkaline. All these basalts could have been derived from a similar upper mantle source - garnet peridotite. Rhyolites were probably generated by crustal anatexis related to the ascending basaltic magma. The Devono-Carboniferous volcaniant is probably connected with rifting along faults bounding the Magadalen pull-apart basin. In the Cobequid Highlands, the volcanlsm appears to be spatially and temporally associated with plutonism.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied the waterfronts of Saint John and Halifax for the period 1875-1978 to illustrate the concept of separation and specialization of land uses, and proposed that there has been a movement of port functions away from the city centre that has allowed that area to take on an urban orientation.
Abstract: The paper postulates that there has been a movement of port functions away from the city centre that has allowed that area to take on an urban orientation; thus separate and specialized areas of port activity and urban activity have developed in cityport waterfronts. The waterfronts of Saint John and Halifax for the period 1875–1978 are studied to illustrate the concept of separation and specialization of land uses. Reasons suggested for such developments relate to technological changes in transportation and cargo-handling and the declining dependency between the port and city.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors test for the existence of short-run equilibrium in the urban housing market in Metropolitan Toronto and find that an unstratified hedonic price regressions model, based on the assumption of short run equilibrium, is equally efficient in the analysis of housing prices as a model based on a number of subsamples stratified along lines of segmentation.
Abstract: This paper tests for the existence of short-run equilibrium in the urban housing market in Metropolitan Toronto. The alternative hypothesis is the housing market segmented with respect to locational and structural attributes. We found insignificant differences in attribute prices across hypothesized submarkets. This implies that an unstratified hedonic price regressions model, based on the assumption of short-run equilibrium, is equally efficient in the analysis of housing prices as a model based on a number of subsamples stratified along lines of segmentation.

TL;DR: The cultural schizophrenia which resulted is Dr. Johnson in the 18th century attempting to fit the fullness of Shakespeare's English genius into the squares of the Renaissance notion of classical dramatic unities.
Abstract: I N EUROPEAN CULTURE THERE ARE TWO great strains, the one line going back to classical Greece and Rome and the other to the local cultures of medieval Europe. Regional or national or vernacular cultures have managed to survive despite the dominance of the Greco-Roman strain in the West, especially since the Renaissance when the social hierarchy which dictated matters of taste and cultural direction placed the culture of Greece and Rome in domineering ascendancy over the national cultures of Europe. The cultural dictates of the Renaissance established a hegemony which was hostile to anything local or regional. Even when the nationalist-oriented Reformation occurred in the Western Church, the cultural inheritance of Rome survived in Protestant countries as much as in ones which remained Catholic. The classic example of the cultural schizophrenia which resulted is Dr. Johnson in the 18th century attempting to fit the fullness of Shakespeare's English genius into the squares of the Renaissance notion of classical dramatic unities. Dr. Johnson loved Shakespeare yet was committed to a cultural regime which saw Shakespeare's \"native woodnotes wild\" as barbarous. It was not until the 19th-century romantic and French Revolutions overthrew the supremacist ideology of the Renaissance that Swedes, Germans, Hungarians, Irishmen and Englishmen began to discover the excellence of their own national cultures. But the intervening centuries had done great psychological damage to the self-esteem of vernacular cultures.

TL;DR: In the early stages of metamorphism, U and Th were retained together with several other incompatible elements (Zr, Nb, La and Ce) in stable secondary phases or alternatively these elements may be held in primary accessory minerals such as zircon and apatite.
Abstract: In the Paleozoic basalts of Nova Scotia (Canada) metamorphosed to a greenschist facies grade, U and Th are closely associated with immobile elements (e.g. Zr and Nb). The coherence of these elements with K, typical of igneous rocks is, however, absent, U and Th are apparently not affected by greenschist facies metamorphism as are alkali and alkali earth elements and their variation thus reflects primary magmatic processes. It seems that during the early stages of metamorphism, U and Th were retained together with several other incompatible elements (Zr, Nb, La and Ce) in stable secondary phases or alternatively these elements may be held in primary accessory minerals such as zircon and apatite.

TL;DR: The overall pattern of home values in metropolitan Halifax has been strongly influenced by the early (midnineteenth-century) establishment of a prestige sector in the South End as mentioned in this paper, which failed to develop outward due to the barrier of the Northwest Arm, which, paradoxically, was not bridged, since to have done so would have marred the original attraction of the sector.
Abstract: SUMMARY The overall pattern of home values in metropolitan Halifax has been strongly influenced by the early (mid-nineteenth-century) establishment of a prestige sector in the South End. This sector failed to develop outward due to the barrier of the Northwest Arm, which, paradoxically, was not bridged, since to have done so would have marred the original attraction of the sector. While nearly all ‘exclusive’ housing remains in pockets on or near the Arm, new prestige housing areas have been developed in the suburbs, wherever fine settings and the absence of wartime shacks allow. In particular, the presence of extensive ‘low-value’ tracts south of Armdale has forced most new high-value developments in Halifax to the north mainland. Finally, while public housing has tended only to reinforce the low-value pattern established by 1950, publicly funded land developments, particularly Forest Hills, have created large peripheral areas of below-median value.

Abstract: Richmond (1982) uses a linear programming approach to the construction of simultaneous confidence intervals for a set of linear estimable parametric functions of the normal mean vector. We present a quadratic programming approach which constructs narrower confidence intervals than the linear programming approach given by Richmond (1982).

TL;DR: The difference between these two extremes appears to be based far more on the duration of the change, perhaps intensity as well, and not on the general process of change involved as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The need for a top management transition is a situation that eventually faces all ongoing organisations. While some replacements require quick and decisive actions necessitated by the death or serious illness of the chief executive officer (CEO), a major corporate blunder, or some other catastophic event, the more typical scenario involves a longer transition period. The former mode of transition (catastrophic event) has generally been considered a “revolutionary” change, while the latter has been classified as an “evolutionary” event (Bigelow, 1981). Yet, the differences between these two extremes appears to be based far more on the duration of the change, perhaps intensity as well, and not on the general process of change involved.

TL;DR: The average log magnitude estimates for Set I, attentional patterns, were significantly greater than those for Set II, sensory patterns, only at the most extreme relative areas; however, Set I patterns decreased at a slower rate.
Abstract: Twenty Ss estimated the brightness of two sets of gray-white metric patterns Set I patterns had figure-ground response characteristics which varied with relative area, whereas Set II patterns remained constant though relative area changed Maximum brightness contrast occurred when the gray and the white areas were equal with contrast decreased as one of the component areas came to dominate In contradiction to previous attentional models of brightness contrast, this effect was found for both sets of patterns; however, Set I patterns decreased at a slower rate The average log magnitude estimates for Set I, attentional patterns, were significantly greater than those for Set II, sensory patterns, only at the most extreme relative areas It was suggested that relative area, or sensory effects, caused the decrease and that attention influenced the rate of decrease
