TL;DR: The future carbon footprint of the Information and Communication Technology and Entertainment and Media sectors in the year 2020 is forecast including the ICT and E&M related impact from a networked society, i.e. a society where both people and things are connected and communicate with each other.
Abstract: In this paper, we forecast the future carbon footprint of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Entertainment and Media (E&M) sectors in the year 2020 including the ICT and E&M related impact from a networked society, i.e. a society where both people and things are connected and communicate with each other. We also discuss sector boundaries, the full impact from the networked society, uncertainty, use of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) as data source and important perspectives when assessing ICT.

TL;DR: Downlink output power distributions for radio base stations in 2G and 3G mobile communication networks have been assessed using data collected from the Operations Support System, which normally is used for network monitoring and management.
Abstract: Knowledge of realistic power levels is key when conducting accurate EMF exposure assessments. In this study, downlink output power distributions for radio base stations in 2G and 3G mobile communication networks have been assessed. The distributions were obtained from network measurement data collected from the Operations Support System, which normally is used for network monitoring and management. Significant amounts of data were gathered simultaneously for large sets of radio base stations covering wide geographical areas and different environments. The method was validated with in situ measurements. For the 3G network, the 90th percentile of the averaged output power during high traffic hours was found to be 43 % of the maximum available power. The corresponding number for 2G, with two or more transceivers installed, was 65 % or below.

TL;DR: Downlink output power distributions for RBSs in a 4G LTE mobile communication network have been determined by extracting data using the operations support system of the network and it was found that the actual output power levels are significantly below the theoretical maximum.
Abstract: Human exposure to the radio frequency electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted by radio base stations (RBS) is proportional to the transmitted power. Thus, knowledge of actual power levels is key for a correct estimate of the actual EMF exposure. In this study, downlink output power distributions for RBSs in a 4G LTE mobile communication network have been determined. By extracting data using the operations support system (OSS) of the network, statistics were obtained based on 24 hours measurements for more than 5000 RBSs. The network measurement approach was verified with in-situ power density measurements. It was found that the actual output power levels are significantly below the theoretical maximum. For high-traffic periods, the 90th percentile transmitted power was found to be about 12% of the theoretical maximum.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method and apparatus. In the method, an apparatus, for example, a base station, receives radio interface capabilities from a mobile node. The apparatus receives a subscriber frequency band priority profile identifier from a mobility management entity node. The apparatus finds an entry from a frequency band priority data structure using the subscriber frequency band priority profile identifier and the at least one radio interface capability and obtaining at least one frequency band priority from the entry. The apparatus applies the at least one frequency band priority to control the mobility of the mobile node.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors elaborate on identified trends during the period 1990 to 2010 using data from several LCA studies over time to conclude what implications can be drawn on the estimated environmental impact.
Abstract: The information and communication technology (ICT) sector is changing: Data volumes and ICT usage is growing exponentially, ICT infrastructure is shared by many services instead of used only by voice, the volume of end user (customer) devices is increasing but at the same time the telecom operator’s internal electricity consumption remains almost constant. This paper elaborate on identified trends during the period 1990 to 2010 using data from several LCA studies over time to conclude what implications can be drawn on the estimated environmental impact.

TL;DR: Output power distributions of mobile radio base stations have been analyzed for 2G and 3G telecommunication systems using performance surveillance tools part of the network Operational Support System.
Abstract: In this work output power distributions of mobile radio base stations have been analyzed for 2G and 3G telecommunication systems. The approach is based on measurements in selected networks using performance surveillance tools part of the network Operational Support System (OSS). For the 3G network considered, direct measurements of output power levels were possible, while for the 2G networks, output power levels were estimated from measurements of traffic volumes. Both voice and data services were included in the investigation. Measurements were conducted for large geographical areas, to ensure good overall statistics, as well as for smaller areas to investigate the impact of different environments. For high traffic hours, the 90th percentile of the averaged output power was found to be below 65% and 45% of the available output power for the 2G and 3G systems, respectively.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for triggering a transfer of at least one presence information message between the network node and a client terminal. In the method the network node is configured to receive information on a communication environment from at least one of the following: the communication network, the client terminal. The received information is analyzed at least by comparing information on the communication environment at least partially with at least one predetermined value. If the comparison indicates that the communication environment is suitable for the transfer of the at least one presence information message, the transfer of the at least one presence information message is triggered to the client terminal. The invention relates also to a network node and a system for implementing the method.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for determining a capability of a user equipment (110). The user equipment (110) is served by a non-shared network (120) in a first place. The non-shared network (120) is configured to transmit (210) a message to the user equipment (110), the message comprising information on at least two PLMN identities. The user equipment (110) is configured to deliver (220) a response message from which it is determined (220) if the response message comprises information field reserved for at least one PLMN identity in the transmitted message. On a basis of an existence of the information field in the response message it can be determined (230) that the user equipment (110) supports network sharing. In other case it is determined (230) that the user equipment (110) is not supporting network sharing. The invention also relates to a network node (115) and a system implementing at least part of the method as described.
