TL;DR: Neither control nor experimental subjects changed significantly with respect to any dependent variable measured, however, and Probable reasons for the lack of significant cardiovascular adaptations are discussed.
Abstract: Sixty-six young men ( age = 18.2 yr) volunteered to participate in a 12-wk program of intensive circuit weight training. The training program met 3 day/wk, 27 min/session. Heart rates during training ranged between 138 (recovery) and 186 (third set of work). Assessments of resting heart rate and blood pressure; heart rate, cardiac output (CO2 rebreathing), stroke volume, and arteriovenous oxygen difference during standardized submaximal arm and leg work; and heart rate and oxygen uptake during maximal arm and leg work were made at the beginning and at the conclusion of the 12 wk. Neither control nor experimental subjects changed significantly with respect to any dependent variable measured. Substantial strength gains were recorded in the experimental subjects during the training program, however. Probable reasons for the lack of significant cardiovascular adaptations are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the mass spectra of several naturally occuring Sceletium alkaloids, as well as several synthetic variants, have been investigated using high resolution mass measurements, analysis of metastable transitions by the technique of ion defocusing and specific deuterium labeling in conjunction with low resolution mass spectrometry.
Abstract: The mass spectra of several naturally occuring Sceletium alkaloids, as well as several synthetic variants, have been investigated. Techniques used include high resolution mass measurements, analysis of metastable transitions by the technique of ion defocusing and specific deuterium labeling in conjunction with low resolution mass spectrometry. Characteristic major fragmentation pathways have been determined for four basic structure types studied: the cis-3a-aryl-octahydroindole ring system, exemplified by mesembrine; its 2,3-pyrido analog, Sceletium A4; the seco series of pyridine bases, represented by tortuosamine; and the seco analog of the mesembrine-type represented by tortuosamine; and the seco analog of the mesembrine-type represented by dehydrojoubertiamine.

TL;DR: The relationship between perceived and physical time was found to follow Stevens’ power law, and confidence limits of exponents obtained in this study include the exponents previously reported for short durations.
Abstract: Time estimates of 1 1/2-, 5¼-, and 14 1/2-min intervals were obtained from 12 American graduate students and 12 Indian graduate students by the methods of verbal estimation and cross-modality matching. Material presented during stimulus intervals varied in degree of meaningfulness. Each subject was tested on 4 successive days with basically the same material in order to determine the effects of repetition. The relationship between perceived and physical time was found to follow Stevens' power law, and confidence limits of exponents obtained in this study include the exponents previously reported for short durations. Neither actual judgments nor exponents were affected by cultural background or by cognitive factors such as memory for material presented in the interval, familiarity, complexity, degree of meaningfulness, and repetition. It had previously been reported that time judgments were dependent on these cognitive factors. In light of the present research, it is necessary to review and replicate those studies which support a cognitive view of time perception.

TL;DR: In this article, authigenic glauconite concentrations were analyzed for Rb, Sr, and Sr isotopic composition yielded an isochron age of 68.1 ± 1 m.y.
Abstract: Five hand-picked, authigenic glauconite concentrations that were analyzed for Rb, Sr, and Sr isotopic composition yielded an isochron age of 68.1 ± 1 m.y. (λ Rb 87 = 1.39 × 10 −11 yr −1 ) for Maestrichtian strata in North Carolina. The initial (Sr 87 /Sr 86 ) 0 ratio calculated from the isochron is 0.7070 ± 0.0004 and is in good agreement with previous estimates of the strontium isotopic composition of sea water during Late Cretaceous time. The excellent fit of the isochron age into current age boundaries of the Maestrichtian suggests that the Rb-Sr isochron method could be more widely applied to glauconite.

TL;DR: W-lOb is clearly an isolate of S. australis several aspects of its sexual morphology serve to broaden the species concept, and the most striking dissimiliarity of the present isolate is sporangium size.
Abstract: There are no known reports of the occurrence of Saprolegnia australis Elliott since its initial isolation (Elliott, 1968). Saprolegnia australis is prevalent, however, in small streams feeding Bradley Creek, Wilmington, North Carolina. The most striking dissimiliarity of the present isolate (UNC-W No. WlOb, ATCC No. 32940) from the type species is sporangium size (FIGS. 1-4). Elliott reported the median primary sporangium length to be 40-80 tm, while those of W-lOb are 189-243 t/m (median 70%). Secondary sporangia in W-lOb, like the type species, usually are short and arise by internal proliferation; but in W-lOb secondary sporangia up to 600 tm in length are not uncommon at the tips of robust hyphae (FIG. 5). In 6-da-old cultures several sporangia exhibited dictyoid spore discharge, a characteristic not noted by Elliott. Although W-lOb is clearly an isolate of S. australis several aspects of its sexual morphology serve to broaden the species concept. Neither the antheridial branches no antheridia are persistent (FIGS. 6-7) while the reverse was true in Elliott's isolates. Fertilization tubes were found in three cases in W-lOb, (e.g., FIG. 8), but none were noted by Seymour (1970) in preserved slides of the type culture. O6spheres are variable in size as in Elliott's isolates, the smaller ones being produced by budding of large o6spheres (FIGS. 9-12). Mature subcentric o6spores of greatly varying sizes thus can be found in the same o6gonium (FIG. 7), but

TL;DR: The authors investigated faculty attitudes toward instructional development on one campus and found that there is a need to rethink the basic model of instructional development as currently used when applying it to the unique circumstances of higher education.
Abstract: Instructional development has been a recent innovation in higher education, responding to the needs of the new American model of universal higher education Misconceptions and misapplications of instructional development have been frequent, especially its confusion with media service A fundamental obstacle to success in any instructional improvement program is hypothesized to be lack of concern with faculty attitudes in the planning of methods to serve them This study discusses the background of the problem and reports on a survey designed to investigate faculty attitudes toward instructional development on one campus Tentative conclusions are drawn in order to guide further study The data presented appear to indicate that there is a need to rethink the basic model of instructional development as currently used when applying it to the unique circumstances of higher education

Abstract: Rats were initially conditioned to avoid saccharin presented orally and were then given 40 intravenous injections of saccharin or saline. Those injected with saccharin showed more rapid extinction of the aversion to saccharin presented orally. Results are related to studies of shock avoidance using curarized subjects.

Abstract: For educational communications and technology this book may turn out to be the most important work on research published in the past 20 years. It is an outstandingly successful effort to combine the research on individual differences being conducted by educational psychologists with the research on "treatments" (instructional methods) which is the specialty of educational technologists. The marriage (called aptitude-treatment interaction [ATI] research) promises to be difficult but happy for both partners. Quite a few people have waited many years for this book to appear. Research for it was begun in 1967 and the writing was carried out over a period of at 1ast five years. A hint of its contents was presented in an often cited technical monograph published by the authors through the Stanford University School of Education.' Copies of a rough draft of the first few chapters were circulated in
