MERLIN vehicles for outdoor applications

Abstract: In the context of the European Mars Rover development, prototype vehicles for wheeled, tracked and tumbling locomotion have been implemented and tested. As a spin-off the versatile tracked and wheeled MERLIN (Mobile Experimental Rover for Locomotion and Intelligent Navigation) rovers for outdoor applications resulted. In this paper the navigation sensors and the control system are addressed, supporting the locomotion devices to deal with rough terrain, including autonomous obstacle detection and avoidance strategies. In addition an advanced telematics infrastructure for remote sensor data acquisition and tele-operations has been realized for these vehicles.

Time-dependency of the 137Cs activity concentration in freshwater lakes, measurement and prediction

Abstract: 14 years after the nuclear reactor accident in Chernobyl, activity concentrations of lake water are measured as 0.06 mBq/l. 2 mBq/l, and 60 mBq/l in Lake Constance. Lake Lugano and Lake Vorsee. These values can be explained by differences in limnological character of these lakes. To describe and predict the data of lake water contamination we use (1) a simple exponential "transfer function" model for the runoff of activity from contaminated catchments, and assume that runoff water determines lake water contamination. In a second approach (2) lake water residence times and 137 Cs uptake by sediments are taken into account together with runoff. With their blind predictions both models describe the 137 Cs contamination in lake water of the three lakes quite well. Based on the second approach, a fish model is used to blindly predict the fish contamination in Lake Constance and Lake Vorsee with a deviation smaller than factor 10 from measured values. Attempts to use these models also for a number of other lakes in Europe and in the CIS countries near to the site of Chernobyl are promising with respect to a generalisation of our results to predict 137 Cs contamination of freshwater lakes for radiation protection purposes in case of emergency.

Condomínios fechados und die Fragmentierung der brasilianischen Stadt : Typen – Akteure – Folgewirkungen

Abstract: . Seit Mitte der 1970er Jahre verbreiten sich in den brasilianischen Stadten abgeschottete Wohnviertel der Privilegierten. Diese sogenannten condominios fechados lassen sich nach unterschiedlichen Kriterien (Genese. Lage, Grose, Ausstattung, Bautypologie sowie Sozialstruktur) typisieren. Drei Akteursgruppen nehmen Einfluss auf ihre Verbreitung: Die Immobilienfirmen, denen sich mit der neuen Wohnform ein attraktives Marktsegment bietet, die Zielgruppen, fur die insbesondere ein gesteigertes Sicherheitsbedurfnis und steigende Anspruche an den Wohnkomfort ausschlaggebend sind, und die offentliche Hand, fur die die condominios eine neue Herausforderung bei der Steuerung der Stadtentwicklung darstellen. Am Beispiel von Barra da Tijuca, dem neuesten Privilegiertenviertel von Rio de Janeiro, werden Ausbreitung, funktionale Differenzierung, interne Organisation sowie neuere Erscheinungsformen der condominios fechados behandelt. Des weiteren wird die kleinraumige Nachbarschaft zu den Marginalvierteln der Favelas aufgezeigt. Die Ausbreitung der condominios fechados wahrend der letzten Jahre ist insgesamt die sichtbare Konsequenz der sich vertiefenden sozialen Disparitaten in der brasilianischen Gesellschaft und der damit verbundenen Fragmentierung der brasilianischen Stadt.

Remotely controlled experiments with mobile robots

Abstract: Remote experiments, using tele-operated hardware via the Internet, are exchanged within a worldwide network of partner universities. The example experiment on mobile robots is presented in this paper, addressing control engineering tasks such as process modelling, parameter identification, and controller design. The experiments, as well as the telematics infrastructure for remote sensor data acquisition and remote control are discussed. These technologies offer also interesting technology transfer potential for industrial telemaintenance.

Novel 40GHz pulse source with l350 femtosecond timing jitter

Abstract: We demonstrate a simple 40 GHz pulse source by combining a fundamental mode-locked 10 GHz laser with a planar integrated time-division multiplexer. Pulse trains with >0 dBm average power and <350 fs timing jitter were achieved.
