TL;DR: Evidence that the translocation of pyruvate across the inner mitochondrial membrane is directly coupled to hydroxyl ion counterflux or, which amounts to the same, to proton symport is given.
Abstract: Recently numerous mitochondrial transporting systems have been described. Evidence for the existence in the inner membrane of rat liver mitochondria of translocators for adenine nucleotides [ 1 ] , inorganic phosphate [2-61, citric acid cycle intermediates [3,710] and amino acids [ 1 l] has been obtained. These systems appear to assure metabolic communication between the cytosol and the mitochondrial matrix. This paper concerns the transport of pyruvate in rat liver mitochondria. Evidence that the translocation of pyruvate across the inner mitochondrial membrane is directly coupled to hydroxyl ion counterflux or, which amounts to the same, to proton symport, is given. Results indicating that the transport of pyruvate across this membrane is mediated by a specific translocator are also presented.

TL;DR: The association of two measurements of glenoid cavity allows the determination of skeletal sex with 10% misclassification rate, and the application of these measurements can therefore be considered quite useful in forensic investigation when just fragmented scapular remains are recovered.
Abstract: Measurements of seven scapular parameters (max. length, max. breadth, max. distance acromion-coracoid, max. length of acromion, max. length of coracoid, length and breadth of glenoid cavity), taken from a known contemporary Italian (Apulian) skeletal population were analyzed to obtain sex determination by discriminant analysis. In the univariate analysis, the maximum scapular breadth shows the best discriminant attitude with lowest percentage of misclassification (8.75%). In the multivariate discriminant analysis it's possible to have a 95% correct sex determination using only three parameters (max. distance acromion-coracoid, maximum length of coracoid and length of glenoid cavity). The association of two measurements of glenoid cavity allows the determination of skeletal sex with 10% misclassification rate. The application of these measurements can therefore be considered quite useful in forensic investigation when just fragmented scapular remains are recovered.

TL;DR: The results show that living stature may be determined by using regression formulae of single or associated parameters taken from whole or fragmented scapulae, and that scapula sample can be reliably employed for the estimation of stature in forensic practice.
Abstract: There are very few papers in forensic literature in which scapular dimensions have been used for estimation of living stature. Allowing the forensic duty to estimate the living stature of skeletal remains, using intact or fragmented scapulae, the Authors have performed multiple regression analysis between the measurements taken from 80 scapula (40 male and 40 female) belonging to a skeletal collection with anthropometric known data. Seven parameters (max length, max breadth, max acrocoracoid distance, length of acromion, max length of coracoid, length of glenoid cavity, width of glenoid cavity) have been recorded. By statistical analysis multiple and linear regressions have been obtained. The results show that living stature may be determined by using regression formulae of single or associated parameters taken from whole or fragmented scapulae. In absence of intact or fragmented long limb bones, scapula sample can be reliably employed for the estimation of stature in forensic practice.

TL;DR: In the Teucrium polium L. were identified, by gaschromatographic and spectroscopic techniques, beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol, brassicasterol and clerosterols, which shown a sufficient pharmacological activity compared to that of indomethacine.
Abstract: In the Teucrium polium L. were identified, by gaschromatographic and spectroscopic techniques (1H-NMR and MS), beta-sitosterol, stigmasterol, campesterol, brassicasterol and clerosterol. In the aqueous phase of the alcoholic extract were identified glucose, fructose, raffinose and rhamnose by PC on Watmann paper Number 5. Anti-inflammatory activity was tested using male Wistar rats against carrageenin-induced paw oedema. All tested extract shown a sufficient pharmacological activity compared to that of indomethacine.

TL;DR: The present study suggests that, together with other matrix macromolecules, also elastic fibres are synthesised in significantly higher amounts during reparative fibrillogenesis and play a role in cell-matrix interaction.
Abstract: The aim of this study was the histochemical, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analysis of reparative fibrillogenesis in experimental lesions of Achilles' tendon. Subtotal tenotomy of Achilles' tendon was performed in twenty Wistar rats. The scar tissue was analysed 2, 4, 7, 14, 21, 30, 45 and 60 days post-operatively. Histochemical, (resorcin-fuchsin, aldehyde-fuchsin, iron haematoxylin and Fullmer and Lillie's methods) immunohistochemical (antibody against collagen I, II and elastin) and ultrastructural analyses were performed. Three phases in the healing process were distinguished: 1) inflammatory, 2) proliferative, and 3) remodelling phase. The inflammatory phase was characterised by haematoma, fibrin deposition, inflammatory cells, fibroblasts, beginning of collagen fibrillogenesis (200-400 A o fibrils) and oxytalan fibrils. The proliferative phase was characterised by angiogenesis and fibroblast proliferation. Collagen fibres displayed a random arrangement and had a diameter of 400-600 A. Immature elastic fibres reached maximum tissutal concentration. In the remodelling phase, hypocellularity, normal vascularisation, tendon crimps, collagen fibres (800-1,000 A o), elastic fibres with increased elastin deposition and reduction in oxytalan fibres were observed. In the course of the healing process collagen and elastic fibre fibrillogenesis exhibited consistent quantitative and qualitative variations (i.e. differences in the type and diameter of fibrils). The present study suggests that, together with other matrix macromolecules, also elastic fibres (oxytalan, elaunin and mature) are synthesised in significantly higher amounts during reparative fibrillogenesis and play a role in cell-matrix interaction.
