TL;DR: In this paper, the three collections of maps which set the standards of style, format, and content for the first centuries of atlas publication are treated. But their style and format are not discussed.
Abstract: This paper treats the three collections of maps which set the standards of style, format, and content for the first centuries of atlas publication: Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, 1570; Braun and Hogenbcrg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum, 1572; and Waghenaer's Spieghel der Zeevnerdt, 1584. Topics examined include ancient forms of atlases, their makers and circumstances; the first atlases, their editors, engravers, and printers; their physical aspect and content; and their historical influence.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors review the contents and cartographic techniques of the principal atlases and maps published under the Soviet regime, noting their large numbers, wide variety, high quality and favorable reception.
Abstract: The authors review the contents and cartographic techniques of the principal atlases and maps published under the Soviet regime, noting their large numbers, wide variety, high quality and favourable reception. Most of these publications have appeared since World War II, and have been general reference works covering the physical, economic and political patterns of the U.S.S.R., rather than works on specific topics. In addition, however, several world atlases and maps of a topical nature have been issued. Soviet cartographic output has been closely geared to the needs of schools, research institutions, planning agencies, and the general public. The authors conclude by listing present shortcomings and also the immediate tasks of Soviet cartography.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors outline the cartographic problems relating to the planning and design of the atlas sheet Lakes, Rivers and Glaciers, and describe the techniques of its production.
Abstract: The map entitled Lakes, Rivers and Glaciers is the first of a new series that will supplement the National Atlas of Canada presently in production in the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources, Ottawa. The purpose of this series of separate map sheets is to make available a limited amount of new material in periods between the publication of atlas volumes, and also to permit flexibility in the presentation of atlas material. In this paper, the authors outline the cartographic problems relating to the planning and design of the atlas sheet Lakes, Rivers and Glaciers, and describe the techniques of its production. The map, at the scale of 1:7,500,000, was derived with minimal generalization from the 1:1,000,000 series of the National Topographic System. Within the plan of the National Atlas of Canada, the map is part of a section devoted to the representation of terrain.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors trace the development of the techniques over the past century to present-day cartographic facsimile publishing that is now carried on in several countries in response to the increased demand by universities and research libraries.
Abstract: Scholarly research in cartographic history has always been restricted because of the relatively few comprehensive collections of historical maps and atlases. Within the last few years, a rapidly increasing demand for rare cartographic works has led to inflated prices that few libraries can afford. The problem is now being resolved by facsimile reproduction using improved copying and printing techniques that make excellent copies readily available. The writer traces the development of the techniques over the past century to present-day cartographic facsimile publishing that is now carried on in several countries in response to the increased demand by universities and research libraries.

TL;DR: A project to standardize data codes, data representation, unit of measure, increment of data recording and other common attributes of a digital data base so that it can be used interchangeably within the Department of Defense in the preparation of maps and charts is described.
Abstract: Numerical representation of map information is currently being used by many map customers and it has far reaching implication in cartographic compilation and use. Machine manipulation of digital data is having an impact on production processes and graphic readout. Map users, interested in geography, land-use, geology, hydrology, geodesy and other earth resource information, will obtain digital thematic mapping data which will be annotated on a digital map base. This paper describes a project to standardize data codes, data representation, unit of measure, increment of data recording and other common attributes of a digital data base so that it can be used interchangeably within the Department of Defense in the preparation of maps and charts. Qualitative and quantitative requirements for digital and physical analog records will be established.
