Do differential descriptions of behavioral styles produce different perceptions of the interpersonal relationship?

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors tried to relate various motivational measures to organiza tional value and reward indexes in four school districts and to the career choices of graduate students in a school of education, finding that the association between desire to assume managerial responsi bilities and success in managerial work found through research in the business world hold for educational organizations as well.
Abstract: Does the association between desire to assume managerial responsi bilities and success in managerial work found through research in the business world hold for educational organizations as well? TL;DR: In this paper, the authors report on six investigations into the prediction of the administrative behavior of elementary school principals, and discuss statistical predictions, clinical predictions, and predictions from in-basket per formance.
Abstract: Reporting on six investigations into the prediction of the administrative behavior of elementary school principals, the author discusses statistical predictions, clinical predictions, and predictions from in-basket per formance. The provocative question "Whither?" asks where we go from here in the study of predicting administrative behavior as an alternative to reliance on whatever "blend of horoscopy, physiognomy, and rhabdomancy we happen to employ." The author is Professor of Educational Administration, University of Texas.

TL;DR: In contrast to much of the recent literature on complex organizations which focuses on informal organization, the authors emphasize the formal aspects of administrative structure; however, while Thompson is concerned with internal organizational behavior only to the extent that it is helpful in understanding behavior at the organizational level, Golembiewski is primarily concerned with the internal dynamics and structure of organizations, particularly with line and staff arrangements.
Abstract: tion and Organizing Men and Power, fall into this category. An attempt will be made to briefly compare the major approaches of each work and then discuss a few of the ideas and concepts that appear useful in the analysis and study of educational organizations. In contrast to much of the recent literature on complex organizations which focuses on &dquo;informal organization,&dquo; both books emphasize the formal aspects of administrative structure; however, while Thompson is concerned with internal organizational behavior only to the extent that it is helpful in understanding behavior at the organizational level, Golembiewski is primarily concerned with the internal dynamics and structure of organizations, particularly with line and staff arrangements. Both authors begin their analysis with the premise that there is no one way to organize which is appropriate for all situations. Moreover, Thompson maintains that structural patterns in organizations do not vary randomly but are a result of attempts to solve the problem of concerted action under different conditions of technological and environmental constraints (fixed conditions to which the organization

TL;DR: The theory of games of strategy and the assumption that dealing with conflict is one of the central tasks of an administrator are used to form a rationale for treating conflict situations as discussed by the authors. The rationale seeks to provide a base for: (1) classifying in-basket items and (2) clarifying the conflict structure of conflicted items through analysis of the response-feedback sequence for an item

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The authors found that public school administrators tend to be neither familiar with nor in terested in Catholic schools, and the implications of this observation for policy, research, and training are examined.
Abstract: The research reported in this article sought to determine the effects of the existence of Catholic schools upon the operation of public schools, as perceived by public school superintendents and principals in "medium-sized" U. S. cities. Twenty-three such effects are identified and perceptions of them are related to one another and to selected personal and situational variables. A major conclusion reached is that public school administrators tend to be neither familiar with nor in terested in Catholic schools, and the implications of this observation for policy, research, and training are examined. The author is Associate Director, University Council for Educational Administration and As sistant Professor, Ohio State University.

TL;DR: Sarthory as mentioned in this paper argued that the teacher, in her status as the leader of a classroom social system, is in the best position to ensure that this does not occur, and argued that to do so runs the risks of perpetuating social and economic distinctions which exist in the society and under mining the cohesion necessary to hold society together.
Abstract: The role of the schools in a rapidly changing society suggests that decisions concerning organization for instruction must not be based on academic considerations alone. To do so runs the risks of perpetuating social and economic distinctions which exist in the society and of under mining the cohesion necessary to hold society together. The author believes that the teacher, in her status as the leader of a classroom social system, is in the best position to ensure that this does not occur. Dr. Sarthory is Assistant Professor of Education at State University College, Geneseo, New York.

TL;DR: In this paper, the school superintendent may use coopta tion to cope with the pressures upon the school system, sometimes as a final resort after trying the usual methods of arbitration, negotiation, and compromise.
Abstract: This paper illustrates how the school superintendent may use coopta tion to cope with the pressures upon the school system, sometimes as a final resort after trying the usual methods of arbitration, negotiation, and compromise. Cooptation is examined as a means whereby the organization can adapt to its environment, often defensively. Distin guishing between formal and informal cooptation, the author hypoth esizes that there are fewer detrimental consequences in formal than in informal cooptation. The author is Assistant Professor in the De partment of Special Education, University of Oregon.

TL;DR: The charge to review two books differing widely in intent and substance as do James Thompson's Organizations in Action and Robert Golembiewski's Organizing Men and Power raises important questions regarding the selection and use of intellectual perspectives by educators as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The charge to review two books differing widely in intent and substance as do James Thompson’s Organizations in Action and Robert Golembiewski’s Organizing Men and Power, raises important questions regarding the selection and use of intellectual perspectives by educators. Like other applied fields of knowledge, educational administration properly makes use of insights derived from a variety of subject matters. The very richness of these subject matters demands that careful assessment be made of each new concept or theory before it becomes a part of training programs or the foundation of a research
