Journal ArticleDOI
Abstract: This article discusses several philosophical aspects concerning power-system reliability. It puts the reliability aspects in perspective, describes a hierarchical framework of analysis and discusses how the economics of reliability should be compared.

TL;DR: Despite the fact that the skin is the body's most accessible organ, measurement of skin blood flow proves to be extremely difficult.
Abstract: Despite the fact that the skin is the body's most accessible organ, measurement of skin blood flow proves to be extremely difficult. A variety of methods have been employed to overcome the problems but none of these is yet entirely satisfactory.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The North Wales supergrid system contains high-merit nuclear generation and the recently commissioned Dinorwig pumped-storage scheme, which has necessitated the introduction of special and novel protection schemes to prevent stability and overloading problems.
Abstract: The North Wales supergrid system contains high-merit nuclear generation and the recently commissioned Dinorwig pumped-storage scheme. As a result of environmental requirements the transmission connections between this plant and the rest of the system are relatively weak. This has necessitated the introduction of special and novel protection schemes to prevent stability and overloading problems

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The application of the principles of superconductivity to power transmission has long been thought possible, but expensive as discussed by the authors, and the working system at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in the USA is a milestone on the road to commercial application.
Abstract: The application of the principles of superconductivity to power transmission has long been thought possible, but expensive. The working system at the Brookhaven National Laboratory in the USA is a milestone on the road to commercial application of the phenomenon

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Using sound to measure temperature is an old concept but only recently has the concept become a reality as mentioned in this paper, which describes the research into the various techniques employed in "acoustic thermometry" and the possible commercial applications
Abstract: Using sound to measure temperature is an old concept but only recently has the concept become a reality. This article describes the research into the various techniques employed in ‘acoustic thermometry’ and the possible commercial applications

TL;DR: Following Dummer's original vision, in 1958 the Ministry of Defence awarded the UK's first contract for research into ‘silicon solid circuits’ as discussed by the authors, and the author of that original research proposal assesses the strengths and weaknesses that have influenced the first 25 years of the UK semiconductor industry
Abstract: Following Dummer's original vision, in 1958 the Ministry of Defence awarded the UK's first contract for research into ‘silicon solid circuits’. Here, the author of that original research proposal assesses the strengths and weaknesses that have influenced the first 25 years of the UK semiconductor industry

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Although the integrated circuit was not patented until 1959, its essential features were outlined some seven years earlier by the British engineer G.W.A. Dummer as mentioned in this paper, who described the origins of his visionary pronouncement and recalled his involvement in the early days of the UK electronic component industry.
Abstract: Although the integrated circuit was not patented until 1959, its essential features were outlined some seven years earlier by the British engineer G.W.A. Dummer. In a recent interview Dummer told of the origins of his visionary pronouncement, and recalled his involvement in the early days of the UK electronic component industry

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A recently developed system in use in the City of Edinburgh has overcome the problem of communications using minimal manpower but with an elegant electronic solution.
Abstract: The trend away from the 'old folks home' towards sheltered housing for the elderly has posed a considerable problem of communications. A recently developed system in use in the City of Edinburgh has overcome the problem using minimal manpower but with an elegant electronic solution.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: One of the main barriers to full industrial automation is in the practical realisation of pattern-recognition and image-processing systems, for image inspection, robot vision, texture analysis, attitude estimation, etc.
Abstract: One of the main barriers to full industrial automation is in the practical realisation of pattern-recognition and image-processing systems, for image inspection, robot vision, texture analysis, attitude estimation, etc. This article reviews the present scene.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A notable achievement of British science in the Second World War was the development of countermeasures against the German magnetic mine, and electrical engineers played an outstanding part inprotecting shipping against the menace of Hitler's first ''secret weapon''.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: For a laser to perform properly, the power supply requires careful design and specification, which pose major challenges for the design engineer as mentioned in this paper, which poses a major challenge for the laser design engineer.
