Abstract: [Extract] Environmental sociologists have a long-held ambition to transform sociology – to outgrow our sub-disciplinary niche and redefine the mainstream. Many of us firmly believe that environmental sociology requires us to rethink the foundational principles of sociology and indeed the very concept of 'social sciences'. We believe such a rethinking is critical to the ongoing relevance of the social sciences in an era of global environmental change. But have we ever settled on what environmental sociology actually is?
