Abstract: Eli 0S * l~~ * Q L diario de a bordo del primer viaje de Crist6bal Col6n al Nuevo Mundo ha jugado un papel privilegiado en la genesis del canon cultural hispanoamericano por ser el primer enunciado sobre America escrito en lengua espaniola. El diario colombino se ha inscrito en la tradici6n literaria americana como texto de fundaci6n, primera imagen del mundo americano, cifra original de una nueva realidad. Desde mucho antes del primer viaje colombino, America ya se habia presentido en la imaginaci6n occidental. Bajo nombres como Tule, Antilia, las Hesperides, y Atlantida se habia inscrito en los lenguajes del mito, la leyenda, y la profecia (vease el ensayo clasico de Reyes). Pero en el texto colombino lo imaginario se transforma en realidad hist6rica, aunque una historia empapada de los lenguajes del mito, la leyenda, y la maravilla que la habian anunciado. Irlemar Chiampi ha visto en la conjunci6n de la concepci6n maravillosa de America con el discurso hist6rico una imagen po&tica fundadora, predicado basico que inaugura el discurso americanista. Del texto colombino emanan tambien otras imagenes de America, tan influyentes en el desarrollo de la cultura americana como la visi6n maravillosa. La belleza del paisaje, tanto natural como humano, da pie a un discurso poetizante reminiscente del locus amoenus y la Edad de Oro. Las Indias del diario son las tierras de la fertilidad y la abundancia, prometedoras de grandes riquezas

Abstract: ESTA TESIS DOCTORAL ESTUDIA LA OBRA NARRATIVA DE CARLOS FUENTES DESDE UNA PERPECTIVA DE ANALISIS CULTURAL EN DONDE EL ESTUDIO DEL MITO SOBRESALE COMO ENFOQUE CIENTIFICO Y COMO BASE FUNDAMENTAL O ARGUMENTACION DE TODA LA INVESTIGACION. EN LOS CAPITULOS DE ESTA TESIS SE REALIZA UN PLANTEAMIENTO TOPICO EN LA PRIMERA PARTE PARA SEGUIR CON EL ANALISIS DEL CONTEXTO DE LA NARRATIVA HISPANO-AMERICANA QUE CORRESPONDE A LA OBRA DEL AUTOR ESTUDIADO OBRA QUE SE ANALIZA DE MANERA RIGUROSA EN UN POSTERIOR CAPITULO. Androgyny in the Spanish pastoral novels

Abstract: . 1 ENAISSANCE pastoral has been called a paStlimpsest: literally, one text written over another (Randel). In order to evoke the pastoral ambiance, the writer must assimilate and appropriate those conventions from the classical tradition that define the canon of pastoral literature. JWhether these conventions are imitated sincerely or ironically mocked, they must be acknowledged and manipulated by later writers in order to signal to the reader the values and codes that hold sway in that particular mode of literature. In general, the mimetic homage paid to the weight of tradition poses no problems, as both author and reader fully expect to find the recreation of familiar commonplaces that denote genre or mode. However, one particular convention of Theocritean and Virgilian pastoral, homosexual love, is almost universally rejected by Christian writers of the Renaissance. Nevertheless, in order to keep a foot firmly rooted in the hallowed soil of convention and antiquity, Renaissance pastoral conflates classical precepts and Neoplatonic theories to teasingly acknowledge pastoral's homosexual love ideal through the creation of the androgyne. This study will examine the forms and function of androgyny in the Spanish pastoral novel.
