TL;DR: A review of the literature suggests that within the last decade there has been a shift from those articles which have simply noted the potential of behavior modification for controlling work behavior to those which discussed actual applications in work organizations.
Abstract: Articles have appeared recently in the management literature which apply operant principles to the study of adult working behavior in complex organizations.2 There have been several articles explaining operant principles and behavior modification to the management audience; and there has been a rather large body of research which has not been identified as operant, even though it has included various components of the operant model. A review of the literature suggests that within the last decade there has been a shift from those articles which have simply noted the potential of behavior modification for controlling work behavior to those which discussed actual applications in work organizations. Operant principles and the behavior modification techniques which grew from them would be appropriate in the work setting where performance consists of observable, measurable, and hopefully quantifiable behaviors.
