TL;DR: The authors found that the greatest obstacle to adaptation was lack of intercultural communicative competence, while most reported on obstacles to integration as being loneliness, mismatch of culture, frustration with the lack of deep integration with New Zealanders as well as irritation with aspects of their host culture, there was not a high level of stress reported.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to discover and describe how international students experience and adapt to their new academic, social, cultural and linguistic environment. Questionnaires were given to 12 post-graduate students and interviews conducted on the basis of the responses. It might be expected, given the range of “culture shock” literature which often presumes the stressful and even pathological nature of cross-cultural transitions, that international students from cultures very different to that found in New Zealand would report high levels of frustration, stress and even depression. While most reported on obstacles to integration as being loneliness, mismatch of culture, frustration with the lack of deep integration with New Zealanders as well as irritation with aspects of their host culture, there was not a high level of stress reported. The greatest block to adaptation was lack of intercultural communicative competence.

TL;DR: In this paper, the concept of meaning is explored and further elaborated as a social learning process, and the authors conclude with some remarks about the need for a strong learning environment, which they call a "career identity" which is a structure of meanings in which the individual links his own motiviation, interests and competencies with acceptable career roles.
Abstract: In modern society individuals are becoming responsible for their own work allocation. In order to overcome an increasing social and work-related insecurity, they not only have to acquire specific career skills but also a so-called "career identity". A career identity is a structure of meanings in which the individual links his own motiviation, interests and competencies with acceptable career roles. In the article the concept of meaning is explored and further elaborated as a social learning process. The article concludes with some remarks about the need for a strong learning environment.

TL;DR: The authors discusses stress and coping in the lives of recent immigrants and refugees within a framework of stress theories proposed in psychological literature, and an overview of stressors encountered by recent immigrants is provided.
Abstract: Recent immigrants and refugees experience great amounts of stress. Literature on immigration and stress has focused primarily on the stressors directly related to immigrants’ adjustment to a new culture (i.e., acculturation stress). This manuscript discusses stress and coping in the lives of recent immigrants and refugees within a framework of stress theories proposed in psychological literature. In addition, an overview of stressors encountered by recent immigrants is provided. Implications for clinical work, research, and advocacy are discussed.
