TL;DR: Olive flounder immunized with FKC grown in TSB-D showed the same protection with the vaccine grown in BHIB and the optimal dose of the vaccine was 10mg/kg of body weight, while the dual vaccine showed higher agglutination titer and protection than control fish.
Abstract: This study was conducted to select the media for the formalin killed vaccine (FKC) production of Vibrio harveyi and its application for olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. For this, we have investigated the immune effects of Vibrio harveyi FKC vaccines grown in 3 different media i.e. Tryptic Soy Broth (TSB), TSB containing 2-2"-dipyridyl (TSB-D), Brain Heart Infusion Broth (BHIB) on the production of agglutinating antibody and protection against Vibrio harveyi in olive flounder. Additionally, a dual vaccine was prepared by combining Streptococcus parauberis vaccine to V. harveyi vaccine and its efficacy was also analyzed with the determination of optimal administration dosage. Consequently, olive flounder immunized with FKC grown in TSB-D showed the same protection with the vaccine grown in BHIB and the optimal dose of the vaccine was 10mg/kg of body weight. Indeed the dual vaccine showed higher agglutination titer and protection than control fish. The optimal dose for dual vaccine was 10mg/kg body weight for each of two vaccines.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the characteristics of the East Sea between 2006 and 2013 by comparing the high wind-wave alert and moored-measured significant wave high and found that only about a half of the wind speed at the sea should exceed 14 m/s or the significant wave height should be higher than 3 m.
Abstract: Marine meterological characteristics off the coast in the East Sea between 2006 and 2013 were investigated by comparing the high wind-wave alert and moored-measured significant wave high Monthly and yearly variations of the high wind-wave alert duration off the coast in the central part of the East Sea are correlated with those of the significant wave height measurement with their minima in June and 2008 and maxima in December and 2012 Both the high wind-wave alert duration and significant wave height increase remarkably during 2010-2013 when compared with during 2006-2009 The remarkable increase, occurring dominantly in December, seems to be related with Arctic oscillation variability However, the comparisons reveal that only about a half of high wind-wave alerts satisfy the criteria for issuing the high wind-wave alert To issue the high wind-wave alert, the wind speed at the sea should exceed 14 m/s or the significant wave height should be higher than 3 m The high wind-wave alerts unsatisfying the significant wave height criteria are issued mainly during spring and summer These results imply that additional surface buoy moorings in the open basin of the East Sea are necessary for more accurate issue of the high wind-wave alert

TL;DR: It is revealed that EP could substitute for MP in terms of growth performance, blood parameters, water quality and histology of olive flounder.
Abstract: Two types of diets, extruded pellet (EP) and raw-fish-based moist pellet (MP) were fed to compare growth, water quality and histology of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus in Jeju fish farm. Two groups of 7000 fish per each tank (initial mean weight 51 g) were fed one of two diets for 7 months. At the end of the feeding trial, significant differences were found in weight gain and feed utilization. Dissolved oxygen (DO) level of the MP tank was decreased from 7.98 to 6.89 after feeding. There were no significant differences in hematocrit, hemoglobin, alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase of fish fed the two diets. Whole body protein content of fish fed the EP was significantly higher than that of fish fed the MP. While the feeding rate by month indicated numerically decreased, fish fed the MP had higher feed intake than that of fish fed the EP. Histological examination of hepatopancreas, kidney, and anterior intestine of fish fed the EP did not show any negative effects compared to those of fish fed the MP. This study revealed that EP could substitute for MP in terms of growth performance, blood parameters, water quality and histology of olive flounder.Key words : Olive flounder, Extruded pellet, Moist pellet, Dissolved oxygen, HistologyCorresponding author : 064-754-3423, kjlee@jejunu.ac.kr* 2014 .

TL;DR: This study looks around the general requirements of classifying the occupations in KSCO, and makes the plan for the appropriate occupation classification of the aquatic disease inspector.
Abstract: The aquatic disease inspector is not classified as an occupation in the current Korean Standard Classification of Occupations(KSCO). Therefore, the roll of the aquatic disease inspector in the medical treatment and the prevention against the aquatic organism disease is underestimated. The aquatic disease inspector is in a more disadvantageous position than the pharmacist and the veterinarian. The purpose of this study is to approve the aquatic disease inspector as an occupation in KSCO. The important contents of this study are as follows. In the first place, this study looks around the general requirements of classifying the occupations in KSCO. The aquatic disease inspector satisfies the most general requirements. But, because of the similarities of job between the aquatic disease inspector and the veterinarian, the aquatic disease inspector do not satisfy the requirement for ‘the principle of exclusiveness'. In the second place, this study looks around the classification system of KSCO. The classification system of KSCO is consists of multi steps. This study makes the plan for the appropriate occupation classification of the aquatic disease inspector. In the third place, this study looks for the legal methods to classify the aquatic disease inspector as an occupation in KSCO. In order to classify the aquatic disease inspector as an occupation in KSCO, many regulations of the laws about the aquatic disease inspector and the veterinarian are to be amended and the number of the aquatic disease inspectors is to be increased by the innovative measures.Key words : Aquatic disease inspector, Occupation classification, KSCO

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors assess the effects of the trade of the CITES listed shark species, and to suggest effective government service measures for the management of Korean distant water fisheries.
Abstract: The Sixteenth Meeting of the Conferences of Parties of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which was held in March 2013 in Bangkok, Thailand, listed five shark species and one genus, and uplisted one sawfish species. All new species listings will be come into force of the eighteen months delay, on the fourteenth of September, 2014. The purpose of the delay is to support the preparation of the domestic measures on shark trade by the parties, as there has been no previous experience in trading the commercially exploited aquatic species in the CITES. The CITES Secretary-General has visited several potential shark trade countries to encourage and facilitate the implementation of the new CITES listings. The newly listed sharks have been caught as a target or non-target species by Korean distant water fisheries and introduced into Korea. So the establishment or change of the domestic laws, regulations, and measures for the implementation of the new CITES species must be prepared before the effective entry date. This paper is prepared to assess the effects of the trade of the CITES listed shark species, and to suggest effective government service measures for the management of Korean distant water fisheries. The Ministry of Environment (MOE) is the general Management Authority of the CITES, and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) is in charge of the medical trade of CITES listed species in Korea. By law, all imported medicines and medical materials must be inspected by the MFDS during the customs examination; this kind of authority sharing is reasonable and effective way of providing government service. Similarly, the designation of new CITES Management Authority for the trade of commercially exploited aquatic CITES species is critical and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF), which is now in charge of the trade of fisheries products, is the most appropriate governing body for this purpose in Korea. The revision of the National Plan of Action for Conservation and Management of Sharks, initially submitted to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 2011 as a practical guideline for shark conservation in all Korean fisheries, could be a effective measure to achieve unification of conservation of endangered species and sustainable use of fisheries stocks. The proper CITES measures for the trade of listed species, such as the establishment of the documenting system for Non-detriment Findings, domestic measures suitable for the “Introduction from the Sea” clause, species specific Harmonized System Codes for the customs service, and an effective shark catch data reporting system should be in place prior to the fourteenth of September 2014.

TL;DR: Optimum dietary lipid levels by using broken-line model and by using second order polynomial were estimated at 7.01% but less than 8.98% for the maximum growth in juvenile river puffer.
Abstract: This study was conducted to evaluate the optimum dietary lipid level in juvenile river puffer. Five semi-purified diets were formulated with corn oil to contain graded levels of lipid levels of 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18%. Fish averaging 8.32±0.02 g randomly were fed the experimental diets in triplicate groups for 8 weeks. After the 8-weeks feeding trial, weight gain and specific growth rate of fish fed the 9% diet were significantly higher than those of fish fed the 15 and 18% diets (P<0.05) but there was not significantly different from that of fish fed the 6, 9 and 12% diets. Feed efficiency and protein efficiency ratio of fish fed the 6, 9 and 12% diets were significantly higher than those of fish fed the 18% diet (P<0.05). Visceralsomatic index of fish fed 18% diet was significantly higher than that of fish fed the 6% diet (P<0.05) but there was not significantly different from that of fish fed the 9, 12, 15 and 18% diets. No significant differences were observed in condition factor, hepatosomatic index and whole body composition among all the fish groups. Serum cholesterol and triglyceride fish fed of 18% diet were significantly higher than that of fish fed the other diets (P<0.05). Optimum dietary lipid levels by using broken-line model and by using second order polynomial were estimated at 7.01% and 8.98% for the maximum growth of fish respectively. Therefore, these results suggested that the optimum dietary lipid level could be greater than 7.01% but less than 8.98% for the maximum growth in juvenile river puffer.Key words : River puffer, Lipid requirement, Growth, Weight gainCorresponding author : 051-629-5916 scbai@pknu.ac.kr ( , 311045-03-1-SB010).

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the effects of different retorting conditions on the quality of canned salt-fermented anchovy fillet and found no remarkable difference in physicochemical and sensory quality between sterilization conditions.
Abstract: Fermented anchovy of the favorite sea food in Korea made from anchovy (Engraulis japonica) and salt. The study was undertaken to investigate the effects of different retorting conditions on the quality of canned salt-fermented anchovy fillet. The salt fermented anchovy fillet was prepared by fermenting anchovy(Engraulis japonica) with salt(15%) at 5 for 15 days and then cold air drying the fermented °C fillet for 1 hour. The dried fermented anchovy fillet(85g) was filled with olive oil(60g) into can(301-1) and seamed using a vacuum seamer, and then sterilized at Fo 9 and 11 mins in a steam system retort at 12 1 , respectively. After sterilization with different heating conditions, the pH, VBN, amino-N, color value °C (L, a, b), texture profile, TBA value, sensory evaluation and viable bacterial count of the canned salt-fermented anchovy fillet were measured. In both sterilized cans, the viable bacterial counts were not detected. There was no remarkable difference in physicochemical and sensory quality between sterilization conditions. The results showed that sterilization of Fo 9 min was more desirable than that of Fo 11 min to prepare canned salt-fermented anchovy fillet.

TL;DR: The purpose of this study was to identify the knowledge level of human papilloma virus and performance of anti-cervical cancer vaccine among health college student in Korea and to reduce HPV infection through concrete educational programs and advertisement.
Abstract: The purpose of this study was to identify the knowledge level of human papilloma virus and performance of anti-cervical cancer vaccine among health college student in Korea. A quantitative, descriptive design was used to study 471 students in Ulsan, recruited from April 1 to May 30, 2011. The data were analyzed SPSS program, using descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. The percentage of the participants who received HPV vaccination was 4.0%. The average level of health belief and knowledge about human papilloma virus were 3.05, 5.01 points. Therefore, it is needed to reduce HPV infection through concrete educational programs and advertisement. Also, this educational programs need to include strategies the knowledge of human papilloma virus.
