TL;DR: This review of ERP research is drawn from an extensive examination of the breadth ofERP-related literature without constraints as to a narrow timeframe or limited journal list, although particular attention is directed to the leading journals in information systems and accounting information systems.
Abstract: ERP systems are typically the largest, most complex, and most demanding information systems implemented by firms, representing a major departure from the individual and departmental information systems prevalent in the past. Firms and individuals are extensively impacted, and many problematic issues remain to be researched. ERP and related integrated technologies are a transformative force on the accounting profession. As the nature of business evolves, accounting expertise is being called on to make broader contributions such as reporting on nonfinancial measures, auditing information systems, implementing management controls within information systems, and providing management consulting services. This review of ERP research is drawn from an extensive examination of the breadth of ERP-related literature without constraints as to a narrow timeframe or limited journal list, although particular attention is directed to the leading journals in information systems and accounting information systems...

TL;DR: This study tests that assertion by examining SOX Section 404 compliance data for a sample of firms that implemented ERP systems between 1994 and 2003 and suggests that ERP-implementing firms are less likely to report internal control weaknesses (ICW) than a matched control sample of non-ERP-in implementing firms.
Abstract: Software vendors that market enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems have taken advantage of the increased focus on internal controls that grew out of the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) legislation by emphasizing that a key feature of ERP systems is the use of “built-in” controls that mirror a firm’s infrastructure. They argue that these built-in controls and other features will help firms improve their internal control over financial reporting as required by SOX. This study tests that assertion by examining SOX Section 404 compliance data for a sample of firms that implemented ERP systems between 1994 and 2003. The results suggest that ERP-implementing firms are less likely to report internal control weaknesses (ICW) than a matched control sample of non-ERP-implementing firms. It also finds that this difference exists for both general (entity-wide), and individual (account-level) controls.

TL;DR: This paper synthesizes recent empirical archival research investigating the link between information technology investment and business value and proposes several broad avenues of future research that may be of particular interest to archival accounting information systems researchers.
Abstract: This paper synthesizes recent empirical archival research investigating the link between information technology investment and business value. It examines (1) financial and nonfinancial measures to represent different elements of business value, (2) IT investment measures and links with firm performance, (3) IT and business complementarities that affect firm performance, and (4) the impact of business context and IT alignment with business strategy on resulting performance. The review of prior research is guided by a balanced scorecard framework that places IT in a business context and highlights the role of potential drivers and contextual factors that impact the association between IT and firm value. The paper concludes by proposing several broad avenues of future research that may be of particular interest to archival accounting information systems researchers.

TL;DR: This taxonomy subdivides the ITO research into separate streams: initial outsourcing decision and its determinants, execution of the outsourcing contract and dynamics of outsourcing relationships, and measurement of outsourcing results and the long-term organizational consequences of outsourcing.
Abstract: This paper reviews the nearly 20 years of scholarly research on information technology outsourcing (ITO), with an explicit focus on developing a taxonomy for AIS academics and extracting valuable suggestions for AIS practitioners. Our taxonomy subdivides the ITO research into separate streams: (1) initial outsourcing decision and its determinants, (2) execution of the outsourcing contract and dynamics of outsourcing relationships, and (3) measurement of outsourcing results and the long-term organizational consequences of outsourcing. We consider the primary research questions addressed, summarize the major findings, and identify the theories and methods used. Finally, we highlight the limited accounting studies on ITO and discuss directions for potential synergies between accounting and IS scholars.

TL;DR: The relationship between IT investment and performance varies, depending on how both financial performance and IT investment are measured, and is often stronger in studies that employ accounting measures rather than market measures of firm performance.
Abstract: We use meta-analysis techniques to examine research choices that affect findings with respect to the return on IT investment. Recent research has established that IT investment is substantially related to firm financial performance. We find, however, that the relationship between IT investment and performance varies, depending on how both financial performance and IT investment are measured. Despite criticism of accounting measures as indicators of IT payoff, we find that the relationship is often stronger in studies that employ accounting measures rather than market measures of firm performance. This difference is driven by research that focuses on the process-level impacts of IT investment. Furthermore, the relationship is also stronger when IT investment is measured as IT strategy or spending, rather than IT capability. We discuss the practical implications of the results of our meta-analysis and suggest new directions for future theory development and research.

TL;DR: The review indicates that the published research on e-commerce privacy peaked in the early 2000s; thus, it has not addressed many of the technological advances and other relevant developments of the past decade.
Abstract: Electronic commerce (e-commerce) has a built-in trade-off between the necessity of providing at least some personal information to consummate an online transaction and the risk of negative consequences from providing such information. This requirement and the increased sophistication of companies' personal information gathering have made e-commerce privacy a critical issue and have spawned a broad research literature that is reviewed in this paper. Key research issues and findings are organized, using a framework defined by four key stakeholder groups—companies, customers, privacy solution providers (PSPs), and governments—as well as the interactions among them. The review indicates that the published research on e-commerce privacy peaked in the early 2000s; thus, it has not addressed many of the technological advances and other relevant developments of the past decade. Potential research opportunities for researchers in Management Information Systems (MIS) and Accounting Information Systems (A...

TL;DR: Examination of the extent to which the information technology controls suggested by the ISO 17799 security framework have been integrated into organizations’ internal control environments indicates that control implementation differences exist based on a company’s status as public or private, the size of the company, and the industry in which the company operates.
Abstract: The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) created a resurgence of organizational focus on internal controls. In this study, we examine the extent to which the information technology (IT) controls suggested by the ISO 17799 security framework have been integrated into organizations’ internal control environments. We collected survey data from 636 members of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) on the current usage of IT controls in their organizations. In addition to identifying the most and least commonly implemented IT controls, the survey results indicate that control implementation differences exist based on a company’s status as public or private, the size of the company, and the industry in which the company operates. Training of internal auditors and/or IT personnel is also associated with significant differences in implemented controls. We discuss the implications of our research and offer suggestions for future research.

TL;DR: This paper provides a framework for guiding accounting-related Data and Information Quality (DIQ) research, based on four major research strands: people and decision-making, governance, operations, and technology (PGOT).
Abstract: This paper provides a framework for guiding accounting-related Data and Information Quality (DIQ) research, based on four major research strands: people and decision-making, governance, operations, and technology (PGOT). The last three have been broken down further into three subtopics each, a total of ten subcategories. With people connecting the four strands, the resulting PGOT framework provides a structure to create DIQ research questions. DIQ-related articles published between the years of 1994 and 2008 were identified, the predominant research focus and method were determined. The coding identified research areas that need further exploration. Traditionally, DIQ research has been pursued by non-accountants. Accounting-oriented DIQ literature tends to concentrate on the decision aspects of the PGOT. With an increased emphasis on compliance, CobiT, and internal controls the accounting discipline can make a substantial contribution to the DIQ field, particularly with respect to the decision-m...

TL;DR: A survey of the literature on information privacy based on a number of research directions that relate to the social welfare implications of personal information surveillance, the safeguards needed at the societal level, and the nature of privacy-enhancing regulations are identified.
Abstract: The information privacy of consumers is an important public policy issue in today's society, and one that businesses, industries, and governments are continuing to struggle with as information technology (IT) innovations create ever-stronger impacts. In this article, we explore consumer information privacy issues and review the results of related prior research. We provide a survey of the literature on information privacy based on our assessment from: (1) the societal and public policy perspective, (2) the business practices perspective, and (3) the individual privacy and consumer behavior perspectives that relate to the disclosure of private information by individuals to firms. From the societal and public policy perspective, we identify a number of research directions that relate to the social welfare implications of personal information surveillance, the safeguards needed at the societal level, and the nature of privacy-enhancing regulations. From the business practices perspective, we sugge...

TL;DR: This work investigates the influence of process accountability on individual professionals’ intended and actual use of a familiar technology in decision-making tasks directly related to their work role by anchoring in the core constructs of the technology acceptance model (TAM).
Abstract: Individuals’ technology use decisions are critical to the success of information technology in an organizational context. We investigate the influence of process accountability on individual professionals’ intended and actual use of a familiar technology in decision-making tasks directly related to their work role by anchoring in the core constructs of the technology acceptance model (TAM). Our focus differs from traditional initial user acceptance research in that participants have considerable knowledge about and experience with the focal technology. According to results from an experiment involving 130 participants, process accountability has a significant, positive effect on perceived technology usefulness, intention to use, and actual technology use. Further analyses show that perceived technology usefulness mediates the accountability-intention relationship and intention to use mediates the accountability-actual use relationship. By incorporating process accountability into the TAM and emp...

TL;DR: A significant positive effect of providing relative performance feedback and positively framed feedback is revealed, such that framed feedback has a differential effect for low performers, compared to average and high performers.
Abstract: Information systems’ reports typically contain quantitative feedback such as monetary values or the number of units sold or produced. We investigate if providing relative performance information (RPI) feedback and framing the feedback in a positive (good job) or negative (poor job) manner induces performance improvements in a repetitive task. We also investigate if feedback framing interacts with performer level, such that framed feedback has a differential effect for low performers, compared to average and high performers. An experiment was conducted using a 3 × 4 × 2 factorial design, crossing feedback framing (positive, negative, or control), relative performance information (no RPI, rank-ordered RPI, percent RPI in first session, percent RPI in second session), and contract type (fixed or variable), using 289 student participants assuming the role of production workers. Results revealed a significant positive effect of providing relative performance feedback and positively framed feedback. T...

TL;DR: Using a sample of large U.S. firms during the economic downturn of the early 2000s, it is shown that Systematic ITC firms achieve higher levels of firm-specific abnormal earnings and are capable of faster recovery when compared to all competitors and competitors with only Occasional ITC.
Abstract: Prior literature shows that during an economic downturn firms have difficulty sustaining superior performance, and a larger percentage of firms report losses. Motivated by this literature, we explore the role of sustainability of organizational IT capability (ITC) on a firm's performance during an economic downturn. Specifically, we examine how ITC sustainability contributes to a firm's ability to recover from losses. ITC sustainability reflects a firm's ability to resist competitors' attempts to imitate or improve on its ITC. We use ITC sustainability to classify firms as sustainable (Systematic ITC), as non-sustainable (Occasional ITC), and as having no ITC (Non-ITC). Using a sample of large U.S. firms during the economic downturn of the early 2000s, we show that Systematic ITC firms achieve higher levels of firm-specific abnormal earnings and are capable of faster recovery when compared to all competitors (Occasional ITC and Non-ITC firms) and competitors with only Occasional ITC.

TL;DR: An overview of DME techniques, and the potential expanded applications of D ME by auditors are provided, and a set of research areas and research opportunities are discussed.
Abstract: A potentially important form of audit evidence is corporate email, which includes the background, intent, and outcome of managerial actions. Emails are semi-structured data, with known fields for sender, recipient, subject, and date, as well as the email body and attachments. Data mining of emails (DME) combines understanding of social networks, textual analysis using natural language processing and other techniques, and domain knowledge. Email data mining research received a considerable boost by the availability of a large archive of emails from the now-defunct Enron Corporation. The paper provides an overview of DME techniques, and the potential expanded applications of DME by auditors. The paper also discusses a set of research areas and research opportunities.

TL;DR: The editor of this special issue of the Journal of Information Systems took a somewhat different approach to the task, and saw the review process as a mutual exercise among writing teams, reviewers, and myself as editor, to strongly suggest directions to authors but not to mandate a single approach.
Abstract: I n 2008, the Research and Publications Committee of the Information Systems Section of the American Accounting Association decided to sponsor a special issue of the Journal of Information Systems (JIS) entitled ‘‘Reviews of Information Systems Research.’’ The objective of the special issue is to ‘‘publish papers that review a stream of research in information systems (IS) broadly defined.’’ The Committee intended that submissions would review and integrate the IS (information systems) and AIS (accounting information systems) literatures and suggest future research directions in both disciplines. The special issue followed a previous valiant and groundbreaking effort in IS/AIS research integration for the IS section by Professors Vicky Arnold and Steve Sutton (Arnold and Sutton 2002). As editor of this special issue, I took a somewhat different approach to the task than is normal. First, rather than a regular call for papers, I requested researchers to submit extended abstracts. The objectives of this approach were to ensure that the scope of the proposed article was concomitant with the objective of the special issue and to identify any potential overlaps in subject matter. In this process, I was able to negotiate the amalgamation of several writing teams. I also ensured that where there was commonality in subject matter, the writing teams were introduced to each other and worked to manage the writing process. Second, I had clear views on how the papers should be structured. As an author of one of the chapters in the earlier monograph for the IS section, I was impressed with the systematic approach Dr. Arnold took to ensuring a common approach in the structure of the contributions and the discipline exercised in ensuring that the goals of the monograph were achieved. It is simpler to achieve a common approach in a monograph than it is in separate papers in JIS. My ambition was, then, to strongly suggest directions to authors but not to mandate a single approach. As a consumer of many literature reviews, I realize how easy it is to maroon readers in a Sargasso Sea, not knowing how to navigate their way. Readers need clear navigational markers and a sense of direction. Third, I saw the review process as a mutual exercise among writing teams, reviewers, and myself as editor. Given the scope of this exercise, I deliberately took a more active editorial role than is normal. These objectives probably added somewhat to the time taken for publication but did, I believe, improve the quality of the papers.

TL;DR: Evidence is found that ease of learning perceptions drive the level of processing undergone by the potential user when technology is easy to use and when the technology is difficult, suggesting a greater risk of failure, situational goals are less influential, and potential users rely more on dispositional goal orientations.
Abstract: Service professionals are often confronted with situations where they have the choice about whether to learn a new technology that could create efficiencies on both current and future engagements. We investigate how the perception of ease of learning affects this decision to voluntarily learn a new technology in the post-adoptive context. Using the elaboration likelihood model as a framework, we predict and find evidence that ease of learning perceptions drive the level of processing undergone by the potential user. When technology is easy to use, potential users rely on their situational learning dispositions. However, when the technology is difficult, suggesting a greater risk of failure, situational goal orientations are less influential, and potential users rely more on dispositional goal orientations. Our findings have implications for future research on technology acceptance and use, as well as ramifications for encouraging technology use “on the job.” Data Availability: Full instrument p...

TL;DR: Five types of online review presentations are presented to mine opinion/product features that the reviewers have commented on and experimental results show that these techniques are useful to identify customers` opinions and trends.
Abstract: The Web has become an excellent source for gathering consumer opinions. There are now numerous Web sites containing such opinions, e.g., customer reviews of products, forums, discussion groups, and blogs. This paper focuses on online customer reviews of products. It makes some contributions. Especially it proposes minimalism and chunking framework for analyzing and comparing consumer opinions of competing products. Users are able to clearly see the strengths and weaknesses of each product in the minds of consumers in terms of various product features. This comparison is useful to both potential customers and product manufacturers. For a product manufacturer, the comparison enables it to easily gather marketing intelligence and product benchmarking information. In this paper, we only focus on mining opinion/product features that the reviewers have commented on. Five types of online review presentations are presented to mine such features. Our experimental results show that these techniques are useful to identify customers` opinions and trends.

TL;DR: In this paper, Wang et al. measured out-degree centrality and in degree centrality by making use of social network analysis technique and found that relationship between IT competency and centrality in the instrumental network is statistically significant.
Abstract: In organizations, evaluating the competency of individuals through the position or status has many limitations. To overcome these limitations, this study analyzes the organization`s informal network using social network analysis. We measured out-degree centrality and in-degree centrality by making use of social network analysis technique. Out-degree centrality is interpreted as `madangbal` in that actors actively help other people, while in-degree centrality is interpreted as `prestige` in that other people want to have a relationship with. This research examines the effects of individual`s `prestige` and `madangbal` in the instrumental network and communication network on IT competency. We carried out empirical analysis using social network data that were collected from undergraduate students. The result reveals that relationship between IT competency and centrality in the instrumental network is statistically significant, while relationship between IT competency and centrality in the communication network does not show significant results.

TL;DR: The findings are that trust toward a Web site influences on continuance intention, whereas trust toward an information source group doesn`t, and all key factors composing of collective intelligence quality have a positive and significant impact on confirmation.
Abstract: This study addressed trust to collective intelligence for explaining the affecting factors to the intention to use of collective intelligence by dividing the object of trust into a Web site and an information source group. We explored the factors affecting user`s continuance intention toward collective intelligence in the view off trust building. We made a well-structured survey of our proposed model and gained 205 cases. We analyzed the proposed research model empirically using partial least square method. The findings are summarized as follows. First, all key factors (relevance, timeless, completeness, understandability) composing of collective intelligence quality have a positive and significant impact on confirmation. Second, confirmation has a significant impact on trust toward a Web site, as well as toward an information source group. The last is that trust toward a Web site influences on continuance intention, whereas trust toward an information source group doesn`t.

Abstract: The increase in the number of smartphone users has recently been steep, which started to offer companies and individuals more opportunities to enter into a new business field. Furthermore, the smartphone applications have become one of the hottest topics inside and outside the mobile industry. Still the market is in its infancy and intention to pay of charged application of most smartphone users is relatively low. However, rate of charged application in appstore is expected to be increase steadily for some years to come. In this perspective, it is important to consider the smartphone mobile application. Research on smartphone application is still in its early stage. Thus, the purpose of this study is to find what are the effective factors on user satisfaction and intention to pay of mobile application. Based on information system success model, we proposed system quality(stability, usability, security), information quality(timeliness, accuracy, enjoyment) and service quality(reactivity, reliability, empathy) as factors to effect on user satisfaction in mobile application. The results showed that stability, usability, timeliness, accuracy, enjoyment, reactivity and empathy affected significantly user satisfaction. The relationship among satisfaction and intention to pay of mobile application was significantly supported. The implications of the findings is that firms and individual developers of mobile application should focus on customer retention through enhancing satisfaction and quality.

TL;DR: This study attempted to identify the relationship between group characteristics and users` effectiveness of MMOG considering group experience and most hypotheses were statistically supported.
Abstract: Group features such as group cohesion and consistency on appropriation(COA), which have been constructed through social interactions, should be noted for characterizing online game, especially, clan based massively multi-players online game (MMOG). This study attempted to identify the relationship between group characteristics and users` effectiveness of MMOG considering group experience. For this purpose, a research model was suggested: group cohesion and COA are variables for explaining group features, perceived use control is a variable for individual competency of playing MMOG, and perceived winning and perceived enjoyment are dependent variables. Moreover, group experience was included as a moderating variables for two relationships, group cohesion-preceived winning and COA-perceived winning. For the validation of this research model, 100 users for Sudden Attack which is one of very well known MMOG games were surveyed by questionnaires. Before survey, they were grouped into 10 teams and were played over ten times by team for perceiving group consciousness. In result, most hypotheses were statistically supported except the relationship between group cohesion and perceived winning.
