Abstract: In this article we explore what we perceive as pertinent features of shared experience at the excavations of an Iron Age Hillfort at Bodfari, North Wales, referencing artist, archaeologist and examples of seminal art works and archaeological records resulting through inter-disciplinary collaboration. We explore ways along which archaeological and artistic practices of improvisation become entangled and productive through their different modes of mark-making. We contend that marks and memories of artist and archaeologist alike emerge interactively, through the mutually constituting effects of the object of study, the tools of exploration, and the practitioners themselves, when they are enmeshed in the cross-modally bound activities. These include, but are not limited to, remote sensing, surveying, mattocking, trowelling, drawing, photographing, videoing and sound recording. These marks represent the co-signatories: the gesture of the often anonymous practitioners, the voice of the deposits, as well as the imprint of the tools, and their interplay creates a multi-threaded narrative documenting their modes of intra-action, in short our practices. They occupy the conceptual space of paradata, and in the process of saturating the interstices of digital cognitive prosthetics they lend probity to their translations in both art form and archive.

Abstract: Philosophical aesthetics is routinely grounded upon a binary opposition separating art, a reflective and contemplative activity, from popular culture, the brute and philistine cultural expressions of the masses. While art is expected to have a broadly conceived educational mission, it has to simultaneously denounce such popular culture forms that involve propaganda, didacticism and immediacy in order to legitimize itself socially. This paper explores the social and political implications of art and left-wing populism through the work of the British artist and taxi driver Mark McGowan and his project Artist Taxi Driver. Abstract: Artists’ embedded reinterpretation results in responsive artwork, made and sited in proximity to existing artefacts, the latter acting as a source. Typically applied through the practice of contemporary art interventions in museums and other sites of cultural heritage, the methodology provides a practice-based means of broad thematic, conceptual or contextual critique, which goes beyond approaches which emphasise purely formal resonances. How embedded reinterpretation produces dramatic juxtaposition as a form of historicisation is important as its associated methods enable both a retrospective and a prospective focus. This holds implications and anticipations for a body of cultural history while contesting periodisation, enabling imaginative disruption of otherwise orderly environments.

Abstract: I address the perceptual phenomenon of indistinctness and its connection to abstract concepts. The paradox that interests me is how a situation of diminished clarity and ambiguity problematizes and undermines normal vision while making way for another kind of seeing and knowing where we seem to inhabit a slippery moment of change or action, and are engaged in mobile, transitory and spontaneous negotiations of space and time. My discussion relates to the shift in theory and practice towards the exploration of the elusive middle, in-between or nondichotomous relation. Applying conceptual metaphor theory, I argue that the ‘indistinct’ serves the function of experiential ‘source domain’ for the abstract ‘target domain’ concepts of non-duality, limitlessness, infinity and existential immersion. Abstract: This article examines the power of invisibility to provoke and unsettle in two of the Wilson’s installations: Stasi City (1997) and A Free and Anonymous Monument (2003). The two installations are distinct, and by no means repeat their claims. Nevertheless, their juxtaposition gives insight into some of the different guises of invisibility threaded through two of the Wilson’s most visible installations. Through an exposure of the invisible, I argue that the Wilson sisters’ experimental images and installations are involved in a complex multi-layered critique of otherwise secret political and ideological structures, structures and systems that are in every way off-limits. The two installations do not just make visible what is invisible – state crimes, personal violation, abandonment, social neglect – they probe this invisibility and find what it is not permissible to visualize.
