TL;DR: Depending on the type of patient surgery and extracorporeal pump needs or size, appropriate units of ACD blood less than four days old can be collected and readily available the day of the scheduled operat ion.
Abstract: Patients scheduled for open heart surgery should have a tube of clotted blood submitted as early as possible to the blood bank laboratory for ABO, RH phenotype, cell typ ing and irregular ant ibody detection and identif ication. Thus, depending on the type of patient surgery and extracorporeal pump needs or size, appropriate units of ACD blood less than four days old can be collected and readily available the day of the scheduled operat ion.
