TL;DR: This article proposed an analysis of the sentence type "Je vois le facteur qui arrive" in the information-structure framework of Lambrecht 1994, where the main clause introduces a new discourse entity (semantic role "theme", pragmatic role "focus"), while the relative clause expresses some hitherto unknown property of this new entity via secondary predication.
Abstract: Knud Lambrecht, Predication seconde et structure informationnelle : la relative de perception comme construction presentative ; This paper proposes an analysis of the sentence type « Je vois le facteur qui arrive » ("I see the mailman coming") and « Voila le facteur qui arrive » ("There's the mailman coming") within the information-structure framework of Lambrecht 1994. It is argued that this sentence type belongs to a general presentational construction which is also instantiated by sentences like « J'ai mon beau-frere qui fume » ("My brother-in-law smokes") or « Y a le telephone qui sonne » ("The phone is ringing"). In this construction, the main clause introduces a new discourse entity (semantic role "theme", pragmatic role "focus") by situating it in relation to an explicit or implicit reference point (semantic role "locative", pragmatic role "topic"), while the relative clause expresses some hitherto unknown property of this new entity via secondary predication. The possible coding of the theme argument in pronominal form, as in « Je le vois qui arrive » ("I see him coming") or « Le voila qui arrive » ("There he is coming") is explained in terms of the possible passage of a given discourse entity from an internal to an external discourse world. clause expresses some hitherto unknown property of this new entity via secondary predication.

TL;DR: Herslund as mentioned in this paper proposed an analysis of the French present participle (the -ant form) as a converb, i.e. as a non-finite verb form which forms a secondary predication with a primary verb and the subject of this verb.
Abstract: Michael Herslund, Le participe present comme co-verbe The present article proposes an analysis of the French present participle (the -ant form) as a converb, i.e. as a non-finite verb form which forms a secondary predication with a primary verb and the subject of this verb. Contrary to the gerondif (the en -ant form), which always denotes a situation which is contemporary with but distinct from the situation denoted by the primary verb, the present participle as a converb denotes either the same situation as the primary verb or a salient aspect of it. In the verbal couple, verb + converb, the converb most often carries the most important information, cf. the prototypical example : Elle s'est levee mettant fin a l'entretien.

TL;DR: Rabatel as discussed by the authors argued that c'est has a double representational value in narratives: firstly, it signals the introduction of a new object, and secondly, it implies a perceiving or thinking "subject of consciousness" that validates the first representation value.
Abstract: Alain Rabatel : C'est as a point of view marker in fictional narratives C'est has a double representational value in narratives: firstly because it signals the introduction a new object, secondly because it implies a perceiving or thinking "subject of consciousness" that validates the first representational value. This is why c'est is enough to introduce by itself a light point of view effect in the narrative and may become a full point of view marker, when coming along with a perfective to imperfective tense shift. All this is obviously of highest importance in the reading of narratives, since such linguistic devices strengthen the readers's referential illusion and identification with the character or narrator, hence legitimize possible interpretative inferences. effect in the narrative and may become a full point of view marker, when coming along with a perfective to imperfective tense shift. TL;DR: Willems et al. as discussed by the authors found a correlation between object complement type and verb meaning in the case of perception verbs, and also found that object complements tend to confine themselves to perceptual meaning, while nominal complements express opinion.
Abstract: Dominique Willems et Bart Defrancq, L'attribut de l'objet et les verbes de perception Verbs expressing perceptual processes can take different types of object complement. Since perception verbs are known to be highly polysemous there could be a correlation between complement type and verb meaning. In the case of voir one of the relevant factors appears to be the grammatical category of the object complement : verbal complements tend to confine themselves to perceptual meaning; nominal complements, on the other hand, tend to express opinion. This correlation confirms and extends earlier analyses of adjectival complements. Furthermore, there seems to be a certain correlation with the form of the object complement, nominal complements preferring to be introduced by prepositions and the like (comme). These correlations are found not only in the case of voir, but also in the case of other perception verbs, which opens interesting perspectives for further research into the semantics of these verbs.

TL;DR: Muller as mentioned in this paper divided adjectives into inherent attributive constructions and non inherent ones, and distinguished between cases where verbs are understood as equivalent operators, and cases where there remains only one explanation : the shared time of occurence.
Abstract: Claude Muller, Les constructions a adjectif attribut de l'objet, entre predication seconde et complementation verbale ; Adjectival attributive constructions are divided into inherent attributive constructions, and non inherent ones. Among these, we must distinguish between cases where verbs are understood as equivalent of operators, and cases where there remains only one explanation : the shared time of occurence. In all those structures, adjectives show original properties, that we could understand if we admit that such constructions are syntactically underdetermined.

TL;DR: Ferngren as mentioned in this paper unifies the description of the much-debated category of apposition, viewed here as one of three syntactic modes of semantic predication on referents of noun phrases, the two others being modification and attribution.
Abstract: Mats Forsgren - Apposition, attribut, epithete : meme combat predicatif ? This contribution deals with a plaidoyer for unifying the description of the much- debated category of apposition, viewed here as one of three syntactic modes of semantic predication on referents of noun phrases, the two others being modification (fr. epithete) and attribution (fr. attribut). Starting from the pragmatic view-point that apposition represents primarily a propositional speech act — a secondary predication — and a discourse strategy, the author attempt to find common denominators at langue level, in terms of basic constructional and semantic criteria, which are hierarchically ordered, with the aim to isolate some prototypical appositive predicates, as invariants covering the different contextual cognitive interpretations, as described by others (eg. Blumenthal, 1980; Combettes, 1998; Neveu, 1998a and b). Special attention is given to identifying and locative appositive predicates.

TL;DR: Maingueneau as discussed by the authors proposed a new notion of narrative angelism, which makes it possible to analyse some short passages beyond the scope of classical narration, and two examples (from Zola and Mauriac) are commented.
Abstract: Dominique Maingueneau : Borderline beings and narrative "angelism" ; This article, based on some concepts of discourse analysis and of the linguistics of enunciation, deals with fuzzy relationships between narrator and character in novelistic narration. The author studies especially two notions that he has already introduced in previous works: "generic character" and "witness- narrator", in order to give them a more precise definition. A distinction is made between "unidentifiable character" and "any member of a group", as enunciative positions in the narrative. The next step is the introduction of a new notion, "narrative angelism", which makes it possible to analyse some short passages beyond the scope of classical narration. Two examples (from Zola and Mauriac) are commented. It is argued that such phenomena, which are very few, are narrowly bound with the resources of a given language (for example, French writers can use the subject pronoun "on") and with the aesthetic universe of the works in which they appear.

Abstract: Pierre Cadiot, La preposition comme connecteur et la predication seconde ; The author shows that utterances such as Paul a frappe Jean au visage, Sylvie est jolie des yeux, Paul a ete attaque sur sa vie privee, (Paul struck Jean in the face, Sylvie has pretty eyes, Paul was attaqued on/for his private life) are cases of "double predication". He developes the hypothesis that this double predication is articulted according to a model background/figure and that the choice of prepositions corresponds to an instructional theory of their basic semantic structure.

TL;DR: The authors compare between the style indirect libre and the discours direct, and conclude that the former is not a good fit for the latter, while the latter is a better fit for fiction.

TL;DR: In this article, Noailly analyzes the logical relationship between two NGs when their logical relationship may be of three types, which are not always easy to distinguish: either they form an asyndetic coordination, in which case it is possible to furnish a connector; or it is a reformulation, and the second NG acts as if it was a substitute for the first, as a better approximation of the referent; or finally it is an apposition.
When two NGs are adjacent, their logical relationship may be of three types, which are not always easy to distinguish: either they form an asyndetic coordination, in which case it is possible to furnish a connector; or it is a reformulation, and the second NG acts as if it was a substitute for the first, as a better approximation of the referent; or finally it is a case of apposition. It is the analysis of these cases of apposition which are the subject of this article. They are examined according to the nature of the determiner of each of the two groups , first when these determiners differ, then in the more subtle case where the two NGs have the same determiner.

TL;DR: The definition one takes as a basis for studying appositions in spoken French can vary from broad stereotyped types to more limitative cases as discussed by the authors, depending on the particular register of language, as well as the definition of the apposition defined by the learner.
The definition one takes as a basis for studying appositions in spoken French can vary from broad stereotyped types to more limitative cases. Largely dependent on the particular register of language, as well as the definition one takes as a basis. From the to the limit cases, the range of examples that can come under the category of "appositions" is broader than in the written language, although one can dispense with some of the descriptive criteria such as punctuation.

TL;DR: Leeman as mentioned in this paper showed that the notion of co-reference is useful when it comes to distinguishing analytically between two types of functions an adverbial complement may have, in so far as its meaning may be circumstantial (e.g. of cause, manner, place) or else correspond to the verbal idea.
Abstract: Danielle Leeman - Complements circonstanciels ou appositions? ; Contemporary studies on apposition no longer take into account, as one of its characteristics, the traditional criterion of co-reference , understood as a virtual (lexical) or actual (referential) identity; from this point of view, certain adverbial complements may be considered as appositions. However, the study of numerous prepositional groups introduced by dans shows that the notion of co-reference is useful when it comes to distinguishing analytically between two types of functions an adverbial complement may have, in so far as its meaning may be circumstantial (e.g. of cause, manner, place) or else correspond to the verbal idea : thus, the decision to dissolve the National Assembly constitutes a mistake in a sentence such as Dans sa decision de dissoudre l'assemblee, Chirac a commis une erreur.

TL;DR: Furukawa as discussed by the authors argues that sentences of the type Elle est la qui pleure represent a "spatially located theme" construction, in which the antecedent of the relative pronoun is not the subject Elle but, formally speaking, all the sequence that precedes it.
Abstract: Naoyo Furukawa, Elle est la qui pleure : construction a theme spatialement localise ; This paper argues that sentences of the type Elle est la qui pleure represent a "spatially located theme" construction. Our analysis of the mechanism that produces this particular theme, consists crucially in the observation that the antecedent of the relative pronoun qui is not the subject Elle but, formally speaking, all the sequence that precedes it, that is, Elle est la ; in other words, the role of the relative pronoun qui in this construction resides in receiving a spatially located entity semantically from the sequence Elle est la and thematizing it.

TL;DR: Kupferman as mentioned in this paper showed that the two realizations of the French Verb avoir are both predicates, in fact two-places predicates and not some forms of copulas, and the difference between them is to be located on the level of the internal argument: for the first one it is categorized as a small-clause (SC), and for the second one - a DP.
Abstract: Lucien Kupferman, Avoir et la predication seconde ; It is shown that the two realizations of the French Verb avoir, so-called Predicative avoir, avoir v and so-called Possessive avoir, avoir г are both predicates, in fact two-places predicates, and not some forms of copulas The difference between them is to be located on the level of the internal argument : for the first one it is categorized as a small-clause (SC),,and then we observe a secondary predication-like configuration, and for the second one - a DP From here derives a differenciation regarding the reading of the predicate Avoir is existential and assignats to its internal argument a prototypically eventive propositional content Avoir г denotes a property state and may, with some restrictions which are summarized and explained, have a posseder paraphrazing There is also an argument for strengthing the SC categorizing of the internal argument of the predicate avoir r

TL;DR: This article examined the enunciative anchoring in each of these forms of discourse in order to study whether narrative fiction offers specific features that are linguistically identifiable, such as the rewriting of an identical scene as fiction in The Stranger, clearly as fact in Reflections on the guillotine, and as mixed discourse in Camus's posthumous autofictional novel The First Man.
Abstract: Jean-Michel Adam and Gilles Lugrin : Variations of the enunciative utterer-centered anchor points and fictionalization of an Albert Camus autobiographical narrative ; In Camus's works, one can find three versions of the same autobiographical anecdote. The rewriting of an identical scene as fiction in The Stranger, clearly as fact in Reflections on the guillotine, and as mixed discourse in Camus's posthumous autofictional novel The First Man may be seen as a textbook case. This article examines the enunciative anchoring in each of these forms of discourse in order to study whether narrative fiction offers specific enunciative features that are linguistically identifiable.

TL;DR: In this paper, Picabia et al. compare fronted and postposed appositions and show that the fronted phrase receives a list-reading, a type of interpretation typically associated with an event-type, stage-level predicate.
Abstract: Lelia Picabia - Appositions nominales et determinant zero : le cas des appositions frontales ; Nominal appositions exhibit anaphoric properties and are linked to their antecedent by a BE-type relation. The initial assumption of this paper is that nominal appositions behave as nonref erring, nominal predicates. The comparison of fronted appositions and specificational sentences reveals that in both constructions, the fronted (nonrefe- rential) phrase receives a list-reading, a type of interpretation typically associated with an event-type, stage-level predicate. It further appears that apposed nominals which include a null determiner are steadily associated with a stage-level reading, whatever their linear position with respect to their antecedent; contrastively, apposed nominals which include the overt indefinite determiner (un) are associated with an individual-level readin. A correlate appears to exist between the type of determiner and the syntactic locus of the apposed nominal : the null determiner occurs in fronted appositions (even though these may be moved to the right), while the indefinite determiner occurs in postposed appositions. These descriptive results lead us to conclude that the null and indefinite determiners must have their own syntactic function, and more precisely, must correspond to some functional heads.

TL;DR: The phonologie du frangais de notre langue franqais is a terrain d'epreuve scientifique et de demonstration particulierement fertile as mentioned in this paper.

TL;DR: Gilles Philippe as discussed by the authors discusses enunciative inconsistencies in fictional narratives, that is, sentences with marks of more than one enuncative node in one utterance, and shows that the reader can cancels the inconsistency by ignoring one of the marks.
Abstract: Gilles Philippe : Enunciative inconsistencies in fictional narratives Because of the specificity of their functioning, fictional narratives often contain sentences with enunciative inconsistencies, that is with marks of, as it seems, more than one enunciative node. When considered in isolation, such sentences may often be regarded as barely acceptable; but in context, the reader will usually overlook the inconsistency. It doesn't mean that s/he makes do with marks of two enunciative nodes in one utterance: as a matter of fact, either the reader cancels the enunciative inconsistency by ignoring one of the marks, or the weakest enunciative mark is given a new non-enunciative status in the sentence. All this proves to be very important in the current debate on the enunciative functioning of fictional narratives.
