TL;DR: Based on the type of arrangement of the ridges and cuticular armature of the foregut, four distinct zones-Zones I-IV are recognised and these along with the structure of the proventricular valves appear significant characters in the recognition of species.
Abstract: The taxonomic significance of the foregut armature of 31 species of grasshoppers (23 species belonging to Acrididae and 8 species belonging to Pyrgomor- phidae) has been discussed with 32 illustrations. Based on the type of arrangement of the ridges and cuticular armature of the foregut, four distinct zones-Zones I-IV are recognised and these along with the structure of the proventricular valves appear significant characters in the recognition of species, with characteristic differences in the nature of the arrangement of ridges and teeth in the different spccies discussed.
