Abstract: An experimental assessment of the influence of angle between the groove axis and the load line on the thermohydrodynamic behaviour of twin groove hydrodynamic journal bearings has been undertaken. At nine different loading direction angles, the oil-bush inter- face temperature profiles, oil outlet temperature, maximum bush temperature, total flow rate, and oil flow rate through each groove were measured for variable applied load and oil supply pressure while the feeding temperature was kept constant (40 � C). To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study of the influence of loading direction on the performance of journal bearing with two axial grooves in which the flow rate were measured in each groove for different working conditions under laminar regime. It was found that the variation of loading direction has a strong effect on the bearing performance. Under some running conditions, negative lubricant flow rate (hot oil reflux) at one groove was detected. This seldom-reported phenomenon was found to affect the bearing performance dramatically. Increasing supply pressure yielded a temperature decrease, especially for high loads, and sometimes prevented the occurrence of hot oil reflux.

Abstract: Thrust ball bearings lubricated with several different types of grease, including three biodegradable low-toxicity greases, were tested in a modified four-ball machine in order to evaluate the bearing friction torque. At the end of each test, grease samples were obtained and analysed through ferrography, allowing the quantification and evaluation of the bearing wear. In order to compare the grease performance in terms of friction and wear, a correlation between the grease characteristics (base oil, bleed oil, thickener structure, and rheological parameters) and the experimental results was established.

Abstract: This study proposes a numerical investigation of the potential use of machinery working fluids as lubricants in contacts operating under an elastohydrodynamic regime. These fluids are usually of very low viscosity and pressure–viscosity dependence. This is why, unmixed with oil, they have been of little interest for the tribological community. Hence, their rheological properties are poorly known. In fact, these are restricted to a narrow range of conditions compared to the range of interest in EHL applications. This is why some measurements are carried out in order to determine both the viscosity and density of these uncommon lubricants. Besides, their viscosity being low, high-mean entrainment speeds are required for a sufficiently thick lubricant film to build up. This leads to an important thermal dissipation within the contact.
