TL;DR: A survey of serials cataloging courses and units offered by library schools is presented in this article, along with a consideration of whether or not special instruction for working with serials is necessary.
Abstract: Past surveys of accredited library schools' efforts to prepare students to work with serials, and surveys of practitioners' attitudes toward their formal serials education are reviewed. The results of a 1986 survey of serials cataloging courses and units offered by library schools are then presented. Continuing education for serials work is covered, along with a consideration of whether or not special instruction for working with serials is necessary.

TL;DR: Libraries should be aware of the factors to be considered when incorporating serials information into an online catalog and make decisions on what information their users need and what form of access and display will best meet that need.
Abstract: Online public access catalogs (OPACS) enable the user to search a library's holdings in ways never before possible and to know the status of the desired items before going to the shelf. Serials constitute an important part of a library's collection. Holdings information is a necessary adjunct to bibliographic information. The online catalog of the future will give access to serial literature beyond that held by a library. As users become accustomed to the OPAC's capabilities their expectations for access to information will rise. Libraries should be aware of the factors to be considered when incorporating serials information into an online catalog. They must make decisions on what information their users need and what form of access and display will best meet that need.

TL;DR: Over 35 contemporary WHM periodicals and evolving topics are identified and played a significant role in the empowerment process, by drawing together networks of women with common, often disease-oriented health interests.
Abstract: The contemporary Women's Health Movement (WHM), which began in the early 1970s, has significantly influenced the lives and health care of women throughout the United States. A direct outgrowth of dissatisfaction with paternalistic male dominance of women's health care, the WHM hoped to regain control over their bodies and medical decision-making by educating women to become knowledgeable, involved health consumers. Periodicals, particularly newsletters, have played a significant role in the empowerment process, by drawing together networks of women with common, often disease-oriented health interests. Over 35 contemporary WHM periodicals and evolving topics are identified.

TL;DR: The CONSER Editing Guide gives extensive information about the nature of the CONSER Project, as well as comprehensive instructions and copious examples for content designation and input of serial records cataloged according to AACR2 and CONSER policy.
Abstract: The CONSER Editing Guide (CEG) gives extensive information about the nature of the CONSER Project, as well as comprehensive instructions and copious examples for content designation and input of serial records cataloged according to AACR2 and CONSER policy The reasons for creating the guide, its method of preparation and the basis for some of the decisions reflected in it are discussed Part II of the CEG, to a great extent, replaces the MARC Serials Editing Guide Second CONSER Edition (MSEG); a comparison is made with the MSEG to reveal what is new and different in the CEG The contents of the yet to be published Part I, made up of current policies and procedures as applied in the project, are summarized

TL;DR: It is drawn that most library users have not noticed AACR2's effects or do not care enough about them to compliment or complain and sometimes the alternatives caused more problems for public service librarians than did the new code itself.
Abstract: Many objections and reservations were expressed before AACR2 was adopted by the Library of Congress, the major shared cataloging bibliographic utilities, and most Amencan and British libraries. This article recapitulates the perceived advantages and disadvantages of the Second Edition, insofar as this affects library public services. The article then discusses alternatives to implementation and shows how sometimes the alternatives caused more problems for public service librarians than did the new code itself. The conclusion is drawn that most library users have not noticed AACR2's effects or do not care enough about them to compliment or complain.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: OCLC's plan to replace SCS with a stand-alone control system, SC350, is described, and it is described how a library should take the opportunity to re-examine its serials control needs and plan accordingly.
Abstract: This paper uses the literature to trace the history of OCLC's online Serials Control System (SCS), and it describes OCLC's plan to replace SCS with a stand-alone control system, SC350. Fifteen years of reports about SCS portray a system that never met all the needs of serials lbrarians. Reactions to replacement of SCS by SC350 emphasize the problems a library encounters when it changes from one serials control system to another. When considering such a change, a library should take the opportunity to re-examine its serials control needs and plan accordingly.

TL;DR: This paper found that only 57 percent of all the titles could be located in any of the three major national union lists of serials of the 17th and 18th centuries, and that the titles were widely scattered in the source lists.
Abstract: As scholars are well aware, the scientific and technical periodicals of the 17th and 18th centuries are difficult to identify and to locate. To test this observation 640 scientific and technical periodicals published in the period 1791 to 1800 were drawn from four well-known source lists and searched in three major national union lists of serials. The results revealed that not only were the titles widely scattered in the source lists, but that only 57 percent of all the titles could be located in any of the national union lists.

TL;DR: A description is given of the development and present state of the in-house periodicals housekeeping file and binding systems.
Abstract: A description is given of the development and present state of the in-house periodicals housekeeping file and binding systems. An automated public catalogue of periodicals was first made possible by the Library's participation in the Scottish Libraries Co-operative Automation Project. Later the catalogue was transferred to the Geac system.

TL;DR: Alternative guidelines intended to rectify problems when the title proper, exclusive of the name of the issuing body, consists of an initial generic term are proposed.
Abstract: The currently accepted guidelines for the creation of uniform titles for serials cause certain difficulties when the title proper, exclusive of the name of the issuing body, consists of an initial generic term. Among these difficulties are (1) the need to predict the existence and form of a grammatical link between the generic term and the corporate name; (2) the use of the catalog heading for the issuing body as the qualifier, which may reverse the "natural" order of hierarchical elements or be in a language different from the title proper; and (3) the usual placement of the qualifier after the title proper when the title proper consists of a common tltle and section title. Alternative guidelines intended to rectify these problems are proposed.
