TL;DR: Liberation theology has developed in Latin America by clergy and laity as a means for reaching the poor and oppressed people and for challenging the power of the Roman Catholic hierarchy.
Abstract: Liberation theology has developed in Latin America by clergy and laity as a means for reaching the poor and oppressed people and for challenging the power of the Roman Catholic hierarchy. It offers ideas for social group workers in reaching out to the disenfranchised and challenges those elements in our theoretical models that lean toward paternalism and limited empowerment. The relinquishing of power by the worker is an essential aspect of the challenge.

TL;DR: In this paper, an empirically-based group therapy model for adult survivors of childhood incest is described, and the results suggest that group intervention did help reduce depression and improve self-assessment.
Abstract: The paper describes an empirically-based group therapy model for adult survivors of childhood incest. Process as well as outcome data based on a sample of 53 women are reported. The findings suggest that group intervention did help reduce depression and improve self-assessment. Follow-up data on levels of depression show that gains at termination were maintained at least six months post-intervention. Further monitoring, testing and fine-tuning of the model is still necessary.

TL;DR: The role of group as the link between isolated elderly and positive interaction with others in their own behalf, and the subsequent lessening of the sense of powerlessness is stressed in this paper.
Abstract: Older Americans are required to deal directly with multiple changing life circumstances. This paper discusses the nature of powerlessness experienced by many low income older Americans. Isolation and self-blame are frequent outcomes and/or factors in the continuation of this powerlessness. The role of group as the link between isolated elderly and positive interaction with others in their own behalf, and the subsequent lessening of the sense of powerlessness are stressed. Group work in the arenas of income maintenance and survival resources, housing, elder abuse, and health care are suggested as appropriate for the support of elderly struggling to empower themselves vis-a-vis their environment.

TL;DR: This paper examined variations in group development in four types of open-ended groups classified by frequency and extent of member change, and concluded that meeting practice needs can be defined as a function of openended groups.
Abstract: This paper is a continuation of the authors' study of the open-ended group. Herein are examined variations in group development in four types of open-ended groups classified by frequency and extent of member change. An earlier paper introducing this study, "Meeting Practice Needs: Conceptualizing the Open-Ended Group," was published in Social Work with Groups, Volume 7, Number 2, Summer 1984.

TL;DR: In this article, a model of group development based on social-cognitve and social learning theory research is presented, focusing on the processes by which a number of individuals create a group identity, or common social reality.
Abstract: Interest in group development has waned over the past fifteen years, partly due to the lack of good methods for capturing developmental processes, and partly due to an inability to systematically apply this knowledge to practice. A model of group development is presented based on social-cognitve and social learning theory research. This model offers a view of group development focused specifically on the processes by which a number of individuals create a group identity, or common social reality. These processes are discussed along with practice implications of such a model.

TL;DR: The authors presented an orientation group model to engage and prepare hard-to-reach clients for subsequent intensive group work, and an empirical evaluation of the implementation of this model with men who batter their wives is presented.
Abstract: Based on recent discussions of work with hard-to-reach clients, this article presents an orientation group model to engage and prepare these clients for subsequent and intensive group work. An empirical evaluation of the implementation of this model with men who batter their wives is presented. The results from the evaluation indicate that the group was successful in educating, building cohesion and preparing members for further group treatment. Strategies for using the model with other hard-to-reach populations are discussed.

TL;DR: An approach to multi-family group therapy for utilization in social work practice is outlined and professional help is combined with peer and non peer help within and across families to attain the goal of altered interaction patterns within families.
Abstract: An approach to multi-family group therapy for utilization in social work practice is outlined. Professional help is combined with peer and non peer help within and across families to attain the goal of altered interaction patterns within families. Consideration also is given to the development of the multi-family therapy group as an entity. The patterns of interaction in the multi-family therapy group, were investigated. A case study of a closed time-limited group was developed with a practitioner-researcher design. The data collection utilized structured observation and audio-tape recordings. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The approach to multi-family group therapy described in this paper was developed through the writer's experience as a practitioner in nonresidential multi-family therapy groups located in mental health and in pediatric settings. A child or an adolescent was the identified client. The writer also has used the knowledge gained from the empirical research which she conducted into t...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the rationale, methods and case examples of a sibling group approach to treatment of children of violent families and discuss the need for professional attention to prevent the next generation from continuing this pattern.
Abstract: Violence is learned and passed on from generation to generation. Intervention at the level of the perpetrator and the victim are not enough to prevent the next generation from continuing this pattern. Then children also need professional attention. In groups with siblings encompassing large age differences, challenging new dimensions are offered to the treatment of children of violent families. This article discusses the rationale, methods and case examples of a sibling group approach to treatment.

TL;DR: In this article, various methodologies used to study groups are discussed in terms of the problems that each addresses, and the problems created by each, and an example of the decisions that must be made when designing research is illustrated through the presentation of a project currently under way.
Abstract: Decisions we are forced to make when we research group phenomena result in either compromising our scientific methods, or worse, compromising our views of the complexities of group functioning. The various methodologies used to study groups are discussed in terms of the problems that each addresses, and the problems that each creates. An example of the decisions that must be made when designing research is illustrated through the presentation of a project currently under way.

Abstract: Sistering is a Toronto city drop-in which serves a diverse population of transient and homeless women, all of whom are oppressed by the "feminization of poverty." This article reviews the nurturing/educating approach which underlies the drop-in program. It raises a number of issues related to this approach, and considers the need for structure and for effective integration of small mutual-aid groups within drop-in services to oppressed populations.

TL;DR: The study of a support group for single parent mothers revealed that mothers' concerns were first focused on their own adjustment to life as a single person but later shifted to parenting as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The study of a support group for single parent mothers revealed that mothers' concerns were first focused on their own adjustment to life as a single person but later shifted to parenting. Analysis of the group process indicated that while sharing similar problems remained the most frequent type of interaction, active problem-solving did increase as the group developed. Implications for practice are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, an existential focal conflict concerning death, consisting of the wish to continue to be, opposed by the fear that non-being is inevitable, is described, and attempts at a group solution are presented as being reflected in various group properties, such as group composition, the role of the leader, group development and major therapeutic factors.
Abstract: This paper discusses groups consisting of patients with life-threatening illnesses and their families. An existential focal conflict concerning death, consisting of the wish to continue to be, opposed by the fear that non-being is inevitable, is described. This conflict and attempts at a group solution are presented as being reflected in various group properties, such as group composition, the role of the leader, group development and major therapeutic factors. It is concluded that the group provides a solution to the fear of nonbeing by functioning as a community where the memory of those who have died can be mourned, preserved and cherished.

TL;DR: The membership perspective of social work as discussed by the authors offers a new paradigm for further development of group work theory and practice, and the member role is universalized as the fundamental interactive unit of social existence.
Abstract: The membership perspective of social work offers a new paradigm for further development of group work theory and practice. The member role is universalized as the fundamental interactive unit of social existence. The individual and the group are no longer viewed in a dual perspective but rather as member(s) being and acting together. A major implication of the membership perspective is that worker and client(s) can strive to make choices that take into account self and others as members.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the use of a multi-family group in facilitating the process of maintaining meaningful relationships within the institutional setting of patients with physical and cognitive impairments.
Abstract: Residents on a heavy nursing care floor suffer from physical and cognitive impairments. As their conditions deteriorate, it is often difficult for families to maintain significant roles. A social work task is to enable family members to continue meaningful relationships within the institutional setting. This paper describes the use of a multi-family group in facilitating that process.
