TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss drivers to create a business case for sustainability and argue for a more systematic approach to management than current approaches which in practice involve working with checklists.
Abstract: Sustainability issues create opportunities and threats to business success. This paper discusses drivers to create a business case for sustainability and argues for a more systematic approach to management than current approaches which in practice involve working with checklists. Based on the core logic of the Sustainability Balanced Scorecard (SBSC) perspectives, a structure for sustainability management control is discussed.

TL;DR: This article reviewed the relationship between expenditure restraint and reform and identified four significant considerations that public service leaders will need to bear in mind as they decide their programs: timing, ethics, communications and legitimacy.
Abstract: Most countries now share the prospect of an extended period of public fiscal austerity. Yet at the same time the demands for improved public services continues. This paper reviews the relationship between expenditure restraint and reform. It describes three broad strategies for achieving savings, noting that each has a different mixture of advantages and disadvantages. It then identifies four significant considerations that public service leaders will need to bear in mind as they decide their programs: timing, ethics, communications and legitimacy. The paper concludes with the observation that simultaneously tackling the needs for austerity and reform will call for extraordinary levels of public service leadership.

TL;DR: This article argued that there are three paradigms of governance and especially public administration: Chinese, Western, and Islamic, which are understood here as potentiality and theory rather than reality and practice as observed today.
Abstract: This essay argues that there are (at least) three paradigms of governance and especially public administration: Chinese, Western, and Islamic — paradigms understood here as potentiality and theory rather than reality and practice as observed today. It then discusses classical Chinese, i.e. Confucian, and Islamic, specifically Ottoman, public administration, from this perspective. The guiding question is whether we arrive more easily at good public administration if we realize that there are different contexts and thus, potentially at least, different ways thither, as well as legitimately different goals.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that the materialistic management paradigm has failed and explore new values for post-materialistic management: frugality, deep ecology, trust, reciprocity, responsibility for future generations, and authenticity.
Abstract: The paper gives an interdisciplinary overview of the emerging field of spirituality and business. It uses insights from business ethics, theology, neuroscience, psychology, gender studies, and philosophy to economics, management, organizational science, and banking and refers to different religious convictions including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, the Baha’i faith, and the North-American aboriginal worldview. The authors argue that the materialistic management paradigm has failed. They explore new values for post-materialistic management: frugality, deep ecology, trust, reciprocity, responsibility for future generations, and authenticity. Within this framework profit and growth are no longer ultimate aims but elements in a wider set of values. Similarly, cost-benefit calculations are no longer the essence of management but are part of a broader concept of wisdom in leadership. Spirit-driven businesses require intrinsic motivation for serving the common good and using ho...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluate the role of culture in explaining the differences in the tax revenues as percentage of GDP on a cross-sectional dataset from 41 countries and conclude that it is important to take culture into account when designing optimal economic policies and planning the increase of tax revenues.
Abstract: The role played by the state is one of the most important problems facing economic science. Apart from its role as welfare provider, the state is inevitably confronted by the shared cultural values of its citizens. This paper evaluates the role of culture in explaining the differences in the tax revenues as percentage of GDP on a cross-sectional dataset from 41 countries. The results suggest that the association between shared cultural values, on the one side, and tax revenues as a percentage of GDP, on the other side, proves to be statistically significant. Our results indicate that it is important to take culture into account when designing optimal economic policies and planning the increase of tax revenues.
