Abstract: R.W. Robeis is the uice president of administration for the Maid Bess Corp. in Salem, VA. A graduate of Xauier Uniuersity in Cincinirati, OH, he has been aru ASPA member since 1973. Robers is the author of seueral articles on human resource topics. umerous programs have been developed to control absenteeism, and a myriad of studies have been conducted on the subject (Steers and Rhodes, I 978). Nevertheless, absenteeism still represents a serious problem for many organualions. According to a survey conducted by the Bureau of National Aftairs, Inc., 60 percent of all participating companies considered absenteeism to be their most serious discipline problem (BNA, l9B5). Yet within every problem there lies opportunity. Absenteeism represented just such an opportunity for collaboration by two companies and a university research team.

Abstract: Intensive day treatment demonstrates advantages for employer and employee alike. The clinical outcomes are every bit as impressive as those quoted by residential programs, and the financial ramifications are most positive. Finally, a wealth of testimony indicates that employees prefer this form of treatment. Day treatment provides the opportunities to stay in touch with one's job and to avoid painful family separations while receiving treatment.
