TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe conditions that influence coach reflection and provide suggestions for nurturing coach reflection, including peer access, stage-of-learning, issue characteristics, and environment.
Abstract: The goal of the present article is to describe conditions that influence coach reflection, and to provide suggestions for nurturing coach reflection. Coach reflection varies based on the interaction of four conditions: (a) peer access, (b) stage of learning, (c) issue characteristics, and (d) environment. Data are presented to support the four conditions, and findings are compared to literature on experiential learning, reflection, and coach and teacher education. Eight strategies are suggested for facilitating coach development: (a) issue discussion groups, (b) coaching pods, (c) pre-training coach assessment tools, (d) local coaching resource centers and educational partnerships, (e) issue-based training, (f) creation of shared visions between coaches and sport participants, (g) coaching environments that value reflection, and (h) coaching consultant programs.?

TL;DR: This paper conducted interviews with 22 youth sport baseball and softball coaches to identify the values and life skills that coaches deem important and the manner in which coaches claim to teach these desired outcomes, and examine the philosophies of youth sport coaches and the degree to which coaches implement such philosophies.
Abstract: The purpose ofthis study was to (1) identify the values and life skills that coaches deem important and the manner in which coaches claim to teach these desired outcomes, and (2) examine the philosophies of youth sport coaches and the degree to which coaches implement such philosophies. In order to address these two areas, in-depth interviews averaging 74 minutes in length were conducted with 22 youth sport baseball and softball coaches (10 women and 12 men). Analysis of the responses of these individuals revealed that coaches generally recognized the importance of teaching a wide range of values and life skills to youth sport participants, yet struggled in articulating how they attempt to teach youngsters these outcomes. Secondly, inconsistencies were noted between the stated coaching philosophies of the coaches and the actual implementation of these philosophies. Various factors were identified that may contribute to these two main findings.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors take a global and comparative perspective to follow the processes through which national, racial, ethnic, civic, religious, local and gender identities are constructed by sport.
Abstract: Sport is popularly considered as a sphere separate from 'important' aspects of social and political dynamics. Sociological and anthropological studies have proven the opposite: both active and passive involvements in competitive sports take part in shaping and undermining collective identities, as well as in political mobilization around these identities. This course takes a global and comparative perspective to follow the processes through which national, racial, ethnic, civic, religious, local and gender identities are constructed by sport. Special emphasis is given to: The significance of sport in deeply divided societies; sports as a political battleground for the production of meanings in ethno-national conflicts and colonial contexts; the implication of sport globalization on various collective identities. The theoretical themes are illustrated through various particular case studies around the globe, including North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, India, the Middle East, Brazil, and Papua-New Guinea.
