A file system for managing data files for access by a plurality of users of a data processing system that includes internal storage (41) for buffering, external storage (44), and a file user interface (I) by which the plurality of users request access to data files. A first level, coupled to the file user interface (41) for temporary storage of data to be accessed by the plurality of users, and generates requests for transactions with external storage (44) in support of such allocations. A second level is coupled to the first level and the external storage (44) and responds to the request for transactions with the external storage (44) for managing the transactions for storage of data to, and retrieval of data from, the external storage (44).read more

Virtual disk drive system and method
TL;DR: In this article, a disk drive system and method capable of dynamically allocating data is provided, where a RAID subsystem and disk manager dynamically allocate data across the pool of storage and a plurality of disk drives based on RAID-to-disk mapping.

Continuously available computer memory systems
TL;DR: In this article, a highly reliable computer memory storage system that is divided into subsystems, each of which is provided in triplicate: a primary subsystem, a backup subsystem and a spare subsystem, is presented.

System and method for disk mapping and data retrieval
TL;DR: In this paper, an apparatus and method for disk mapping and data retrieval includes a data storage medium on which has been stored a plurality of data records, each record includes at least a record identification portion, for uniquely identifying each record from among the plurality of records.
Patent
System for allocating storage spaces based upon required and optional service attributes having assigned piorities
TL;DR: In this paper, a storage device selection program responds to file allocation requests by comparing the specified set of service attributes with the data stored in the service class table and selecting one of the data storage devices in accordance with predefined service attribute matching criteria.

System of device independent file directories using a tag between the directories and file descriptors that migrate with the files
TL;DR: In this article, the file system includes a routine that monitors disk loading and unused disk capacity, and automatically moves files among the disks so as to better balance disk usage, which can be used to find a file by translating a tag value into a pointer to the disk on which the file is stored and a pointer of the file's descriptor entry.

Parity spreading to enhance storage access
Brian Eldridge Clark,Terrence James Stewart,Francis Daniel Lawlor,George David Timms,Werner Eric Schmidt-Stumpf +4 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a storage management mechanism distributes parity blocks corresponding to multiple data blocks substantially equally among a set of storage devices, enhancing the access characteristics of the set of devices.

Synchronized Disk Interleaving
TL;DR: The advantages and limitations of the proposed disk interleaving scheme are analyzed using the M/G/1 queueing model and compared to the conventional disk access mechanism.

Secure data processing system architecture with format control
TL;DR: In this paper, means and methods of securing protected system files in a data processing system are disclosed, wherein the information determining access rights of system users to the protected systems files remains at all times within a secure processor.

Fast write operations

TL;DR: In this paper, a technique for performing fast write operation is described for performing a host write request, which would normally be serviced by an immediate physical write to a data storage device, is instead written to cache and nonvolatile storage in the data storage devices controller.
