TLDR
In this paper, the authors discuss how the adoption of the Cascade principle can influence the supply of biomass and other ecosystem services, with special reference to the Mediterranean context, in particular with respect to the use of the Mediterranean region.
Abstract
The debate on forestry and bioenergy is influenced by a new principle defined in the recently approved document on the Forest Strategy of the European Union, the “cascade” principle. This principle implies the priority use of wood material based on the higher added value that can be potentially generated along the wood value chain. The paper discusses how the adoption of the “cascade” principle can influence the supply of biomass and other ecosystem services, with special reference to the Mediterranean context

Green, circular, bio economy: A comparative analysis of sustainability avenues

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors comprehensively analyse the diversity within and between the three concepts of Circular Economy, Green Economy and Bioeconomy, and find that, for what concerns environmental sustainability, Green economy acts as an ‘umbrella’ concept, including elements from Circular economy and bioeconomy concepts, as well as additional ideas, e.g. nature-based solutions.

Towards sustainability? Forest-based circular bioeconomy business models in Finnish SMEs

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors employed content analysis on interview data gathered from managers in Finnish SME companies from the field of packaging, textiles, composite materials, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products.

Thinking green, circular or bio: Eliciting researchers' perspectives on a sustainable economy with Q method

TL;DR: In this paper, leading scholars working on sustainability issues were asked to rank 36 statements related to either circular, green, bio, growth, steady-state or degrowth economy, and three archetypical perspectives were identified across the respondents: 1. circular solutions towards economic-environmental decoupling in a degrowth perspective; 2. a mix of circular and green economy solutions; 3. a green economy perspective, with an emphasis on natural capital and ecosystem services, and critical towards growth.

Failures of political decentralization in promoting network governance in the forest sector: Observations from Italy

TL;DR: In this paper, a qualitative-based document analysis and observations collected in three case-study Regions (Veneto, Molise and Sicily) were used to provide interpretations of the failures in network forest governance in Italy connected with the decentralization policy process.

Global outlook for wood and forests with the bioenergy demand implied by scenarios of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

TL;DR: In this paper, the Global Forest Products Model (GFPM) was modified to link the forest sector to two scenarios of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and to represent the utilization of fuelwood and industrial roundwood to produce biofuels.

An economic analysis of the potential contribution of forest biomass to the EU RES target and its implications for the EU forest industries

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of increasing energy wood prices on the EU forest sector and on the use of wood biomass for energy were examined under two contrasting scenarios of future global development, defined by the A1 and B2 storylines of IPCC.

Consequences of increasing bioenergy demand on wood and forests: An application of the Global Forest Products Model

TL;DR: The Global Forest Products Model (GFPM) was applied to project the consequences for the global forest sector of doubling the rate of growth of bioenergy demand relative to a base scenario, other drivers being maintained constant as mentioned in this paper.

Forest Bioenergy for Europe

TL;DR: The European Forest Institute (EFI) as discussed by the authors is an international organization established by European States that facilitates and stimulates forest related networking and promotes the supply of unbiased and policy relevant information on forests and forestry.
