Abstract
PHYSICAL chemistry in the present-day sense of the term may be said to date from 1887, the year in which Ramsay came to London, Ostwald was appointed to the chair in Leipzig, and the Zeitschrift fur physikalische Chemie was founded by Ostwald and van't Hoff. Although many pioneers, amongst whom may be mentioned Deville, Debray, Guldberg and Waage, Gibbs, Horstmann, Berthelot, Thomson, Harcourt and Esson, Gladstone, Le Chatelier, and Lemoine had prepared the way for the new development in chemical science, it was the combined influence of van't Hoff, Arrhenius, Ostwald, and Ramsay that gave direction and strength to the new current of thought and research. A System of Physical Chemistry. By Prof. W. C. McC. Lewis. Two vols. Vol. i., pp. xiv + 523, Vol. ii., pp. vii + 552. (London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1916.) 9s. net each vol.

Factors controlling the electrolyte and water distribution in the blood

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors have assumed for the blood the validity of the following physico-chemical laws: At and near the neutral point all strong alkalies are in the form of salts.
Journal ArticleDOI

The intra-ocular pressure and drainage of the aqueous humour.

TL;DR: It is found that the sensitivity of radial charts for detecting astigmatism can be much increased by raising the intensity of their illumination.
Journal ArticleDOI

The denaturation of egg albumin by ultra-violet radiation.

TL;DR: The coagulation of isoelectric egg albumin solutions, on exposure to ultraviolet radiation, involves three distinct processes, the light denaturation of the albumin molecule, a reaction between the light Denatured molecule and water which may be similar to heat denaturation but occurs at a lower temperature, and the flocculation of the denatured molecules to form a coagulum.

Studies in the Physical Chemistry of the Proteins. XIII. The Solvent Action of Sodium Chloride on Egg Albumin in 25% Ethanol at -5°

TL;DR: Recent advances in the methods of isolating and of estimating amino acids have greatly increased the knowledge of the composition of certain proteins.

Thixotropic Phenomena in Water: Quantitative Indicators of Casimir-Magnetic Transformations from Vacuum Oscillations (Virtual Particles)

TL;DR: Theoretical and experimental results indicate that components of thixotropy, such as specific domains of intercalated water molecules, could display excess correlations over very large distances because the energies of the universal quantity and water converge it may be a special conduit for discrete transformations from virtual to real states.

Studies of gas and electrolyte equilibria in the blood v. factors controlling the electrolyte and water distribution in the blood

TL;DR: On the basis of the assumption that the above laws are valid for blood, mathematical expressions have been derived which indicate the distribution of electrolytes and water between cells and serum, and the manner in which the distribution is affected by changes in PH (CO2 tension) and oxygen content.
