In an automobile having an internal combustion engine whose exhaust is passed through a catalytic converter for decreasing the discharge of products of combustion, a converter heating system to maintain the catalytic converter at a predetermined temperature so that it is effective upon engine start-up to diminish products of combustion. The converter heating system includes in combination a small pump which draws an air-fuel vapor mixture from the fuel tank, an igniter and a pilot burner which is mounted on the converter. Dilution air is mixed with the air-fuel vapor in the pilot burner and ignited by a spark pluglike device which is powered by a vibrator coil system.

Keep-hot catalytic converter

An antipollution system for internal combustion engines in which the air pollutants in the exhaust gases are completely burned to produce an exhaust gas from the engine which is substantially free of air polluting materials. An air injector is positioned in the exhaust stream to provide the necessary oxygen to burn the pollutants. The exhaust gases are fed through an air injector and combustion chamber unit which is heated by the exhaust gases and remains at a relatively high temperature while the engine is operating so as to complete the burning of all air polluting materials contained in the exhaust gases in the presences of the supplied air. The air is forced fed by any desired blower and optionally includes air extracted from the crank case in engines so equipped. The air may be preheated by contact with the exhaust manifold in one form of the invention and may be entrained with the exhaust gases before reaching the combustion chamber unit in another form of the invention.

Antipollution system for internal combustion engines

An exhaust reactor for reducing the amount of environment pollutants including hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and the like, introduced into the atmosphere with the exhaust gases normally produced and emitted by a combustion engine. The reactor illustrated has a longitudinally extending first reaction zone which receives the high-temperature combustion gases directly from the engine cylinder and permits combustion of at least a substantial portion of the pollutants therein, and a second reaction zone disposed about the first zone and supporting the first zone within the reactor housing. The second zone is formed by a plurality of tubes of relatively small diameter extending longitudinally of and disposed around the first reaction zone. The tubes support the housing of the first reaction zone and, together with such housing, form a monolithic reaction core. The monolithic core is insulated and, in a preferred embodiment, a peripheral portion of the monolithic core has a layer of tubes which do not receive the hot exhaust gases and thus act as the insulating barrier for the reaction zones. The portion of the small tubes forming passageways for the gases comprises the second reaction zone, and, when these tubes are made of a crystalline oxide ceramic material, they act as solid contact catalytic surfaces which promote combustion of the pollutants therein before the gases exhaust from the second reaction zone into the atmosphere.

A burner for heating an exhaust gas stream includes a combustor head (38) with a fuel/air charge preparator (52) comprising a fuel nozzle (60) and dual vortex atomiser (56). The charge preparator is mounted on one side of a partition (46) including an outlet (48) through which the atomised fuel and air pass to a combustion chamber (34) formed by a combustor tube (36) fixed to the partition (46). The combustor tube (36) has igniting means (42) and outlets (44) for the burning fuel/air mixture. The outlets (44) have flow directing louvres (110) directing the combusted mixture in a predetermined direction to optimise mixing of the combusted mixture with the exhaust gas stream. The combustor head (38) is mounted through an opening (78) in a housing which positions the combustor tube outlets (44) in the exhaust stream.
