An ergonomic evaluation of shift work in different health care units

TL;DR: It was observed that although on-job sleep facilities were available during night shift in some health care units, a large number of personnel complained about sleeplessness and nonadaption to the night-shift schedule.
Abstract: An elaborate ergonomic questionnaire was applied on 300 personnel working in shifts in different health care units of West Bengal. Physiological responses and psychophysiological responses were studied on ten subjects to evaluate work stress and job demands in different shifts. It was observed that although on-job sleep facilities were available during night shift in some health care units, a large number of personnel complained about sleeplessness and nonadaption to the night-shift schedule. The scores obtained from the answers to the questionnaire revealed that only a few (13%) of the personnel were of the 'Evening' type, whose complaints about different health problems are much less. They tended to adjust to the night work quickly from the change of day or afternoon shifts.

TL;DR: This review aims at jotting down the available literature regarding the chronotype evaluation and the various contributing factors in Asian perspectives such that there can be huge cross-cultural studies emphasizing environmental, geographical differences, lifestyle habits, work schedule, and other contributing factors regarding the understanding of circadian preference of humans.
Abstract: Diurnal preferences refers to one's preference of performing timely activities where one may prefer for late timings and the other for earlier, which account for their chronotype that is controlled partly by genetic factors and are also influenced by environmental factors. Individual's circadian preference can be drawn using questionnaire tools as well as can be externally validated by studying various physiological parameters that has a rhythmicity. Determination of chronotype is well studied worldwide but mostly in European and American countries. Asia being the largest continent, comprising so many countries still did not have widespread studies over chronotype assessment and its implications. This review aims at jotting down the available literature regarding the chronotype evaluation and the various contributing factors in Asian perspectives such that there can be huge cross-cultural studies emphasizing environmental, geographical differences, lifestyle habits, work schedule, and other contributing factors regarding the understanding of circadian preference of humans, which is really hard to define. The dearth in studies regarding diurnal preferences and physiological altercations, which is in turn influenced by the work schedule and the resultant sleep-wake pattern disorientation, needs further investigation worldwide and this available literature may put some light in the path of future research scope.

TL;DR: A 13-item scale was developed that distills the best items from two of the widely used circadian rhythms scales, and Relationships between the new composite scale and external criteria are comparable with or stronger than similar relationships between the published scales and internal criteria.
Abstract: Circadian rhythms, cyclic fluctuations in many physiological and psychological functions, are thought to influence adjustment to shiftwork. A widely acknowledged individual difference in circadian rhythms, commonly called morningness, indicates preferences associated with morning or evening activities. Various self-report instruments have been developed to measure morningness, although little measurement data have been published for these scales. Because morningness scales are being used to select workers for night shiftwork, psychometric evaluations of these scales are needed. Psychometric assessments of undergraduate responses (N = 501) on three widely used scales indicate internal (interitem) measurement deficiencies in all three. Therefore, a 13-item scale was developed that distills the best items from two of these scales. Relationships between the new composite scale and external criteria are comparable with or stronger than similar relationships between the published scales and external criteria.

TL;DR: The typical industrial workers' oral temperature rhythm also did not change significantly with the shift changes, but their pulse rate rhythm changed slightly with shift change, possibly in an attempt to adapt.
Abstract: The present study was undertaken in order to find out the effect of changes of shifts on different physiological responses in Indian industrial workers Two groups, one of 8 workers from industries and another of 6 sedentary subjects used as controls, acted as volunteers in this study The first group worked in three different shift rotations: morning, afternoon and night The second group worked in two shifts: day and night only Different physiological responses, specially the pulse rate and oral temperature, were recorded hourly The other physiological responses, such as frequency of micturition, gastro-intestinal disturbances, hours of sleep were also noted Several days of consecutive work and recreational activities were considered in each subject In the control group, the oral temperature rhythm did not change significantly with the change of shifts; so did the pulse rate rhythm But this group had less sleep and higher frequency of micturition in the night shift routine than those during day shift The typical industrial workers' oral temperature rhythm also did not change significantly with the shift changes, but their pulse rate rhythm changed slightly with shift change, possibly in an attempt to adapt They generally slept well in all 3 shifts and had micturition equally frequent However, there were individual variations with some peculiarities in both the groups
