Abstract
ETHMICS is a testbed to investigate various aspects of multimedia communication in a high-speed networked environment. With a view to realistic application experiments, a multimedia workstation has been developed, yielding new insights about workstation architecture and local access arrangements. In terms of software, ETHMICS is based on an object-oriented application framework. This framework has a videophone application as one of its first derivatives. Hardware and software developments have been complemented by some fundamental studies on the impact of multimedia quality of service (QOS) requirements on the strategies for scheduling workstation and network resources. >

The ESSAI teleshopping system: an example of a broadband multimedia application

F. Mercalli, +1 more
TL;DR: The goal of the paper is to show how the progress in multimedia and communication technologies makes possible the implementation of an effective teleshopping application, based on a unique control center connected through a network to a large number of remote low cost vending terminals.

Apparatus and Method for Providing Access to a Data Stream by a Plurality of Users at a Same Time

TL;DR: In this paper, a data stream splitter manager listens for new client device connections and generates a pseudo-terminal for the client device and adds the client devices and pseudoterminal information to the data stream table.

Multipoint video teleconferencing apparatus and system using the same

TL;DR: In this paper, a line interface is connected to communication channels for receiving data-compressed integrated frame format signals from an adjacent video teleconferencing apparatus, which contains the respective video frames of user terminals.

Essential factors for full-interactive VOD server: video file system, disk scheduling, network

TL;DR: A prototypical VOD system is constructed, which includes an interactive network-interface, application protocols and title management, and it is confirmed that these proposals are feasible.

An analysis of TCP processing overhead

TL;DR: A detailed study was made of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), the transport protocol from the Internet protocol suite, and it was concluded that TCP is in fact not the source of the overhead often observed in packet processing, and that it could support very high speeds if properly implemented.

An Application Framework for Multimedia Communication

TL;DR: Multimedia workstations will not find acceptance unless presented with attractive and easy-touse applications which maintain a consistent user-interface, so a framework on which to base these applications might be of some use.

A Network Interface for a Multimedia Communication System

TL;DR: The ETMUCS project with its novel network interface is introduced in this paper, where the requirements of the communication system are elaborated, based on the functionality described, and the implementation of the Interaction Activity Model in hardware and software is briefly presented.
