Abstract
Owing to the operation of disconnector switches, very fast transient overvoltages can generate a voltage oscillation inside power transformers connected to them. A practical method to analyse such oscillations is developed based on multiconductor transmission-line theory. The analysis is conducted in two steps in the frequency domain: first the whole transformer winding is simulated using a single transmission-line model; and secondly, the phenomena in the first coil are analysed using a multiconductor transmission-line model. The numerical results for an actual 525 kV power transformer conform with experiments. The interturn voltage shows a resonance determined by the travelling waves in the coil. The propagation of travelling waves is visualised using time domain analysis.

Comparison of Transformer Detailed Models for Fast and Very Fast Transient Studies

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared the two well-known multiconductor transmission line (MTL) and lumped parameter detailed (RLC ladder network) models to model the highvoltage (HV) winding of a 220/35-kV, 50-MVA transformer.

Experimental investigation of high frequency voltage oscillation in transformer windings

TL;DR: In this paper, the interturn voltages of 500 kV class transformers were measured using an optical fiber transmission system and it was found that an interturn traveling wave is generated at either end of the coil and propagates along the winding.

Performance of traveling waves in coils and windings

TL;DR: A simplified but nevertheless rigorous conception of the wave propagation within such windings may therefore be advantageous as mentioned in this paper, and it may be used for coils in communication circuits as well. But it is not suitable for the use of windings in communication networks.
