Traditional medicine with a long history has played a prominent role in treating diseases throughout the world. India became a herbal hub. In India, several medicinal plants were found to possess anticancer agents since plants contain significant amount of phytochemicals that are antioxidant which can be used for the prevention and treatment of cancer. In the present study, the antioxidant activity by DPPH free radical scavenging assay and anticancer activity by MTT reduction cytotoxicity assay was investigated on MDA-MB 231 Breast Cancer Cell Lines. The dried leaf (DLM), fruit (DFM) and stem (DSM) of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis extracted in methanol were used for this assay and the results revealed that DFM at 15 μg/ml conc. exhibited strong inhibition of cancerous cell growth with 46%, whereas 71% inhibition was observed with DLM at 30 μg/ml conc. and DSM at 30 μg/ml conc. showed 82% inhibition. The maximum anti-oxidant activity obtained with DFM at 1000mg/ml conc. is 93.8% whereas the least activity observed is 27.8% at 1.0 mg/ml concentration with DSM.

Antioxidant and anticancer activities of nyctanthes arbor-tristis

Merremia emarginata Burm. F (Convolvulaceae) is a perennial, much branched herb (creeper). It is found widely distributed all over the India, specially in damp places in upper gangetic plain, Gujarat, Bihar, West Bengal, Westernâ Ghats, ascending up to 900m in the hills, Goa, Karnataka in India, Ceylon and Tropical Africa. Merremia emarginata is also known as Ipomoea reniformis chois. It is reported to have many important medicinal properties. In the Indigenous system of Medicine, Ipomoea reniformis has been claimed to be useful for cough, headache, neuralgia, rheumatism, diuretic, inflammation, troubles of nose, fever due to enlargement of liver and also for treating cancer. The present study was designed to evaluate the invitro anticancer activity of Merremia emarginata Burm.F. The different solvent fraction of whole plant Merremia emarginata Burm.F was subjected for MTT assay. The ethylacetate fraction of whole plant was found to be cytotoxic against human cervical carcinoma Hela cell lines and human breast carcinoma MCF cell lines. The IC50 value of ethylacetate fraction was 51.57μg/ml against Hela cell lines and 39.6μg/ml against MCF-7 cell lines. Significant results were observed thereby justifying the use of plant in the traditional system of medicine

ANTICANCER ACTIVITY OF MERREMIA EMARGINATA (Burm.F) AGAINST HUMAN CERVICAL AND BREAST CARCINOMA

The present study has been performed experimentally by in vitro method to examine the anti cancer activity of various concentrations of ethanolic extract of flowers of Plumeria rubra. The report on to the experiment reveals a significant anti cancer activity at different concentrations of the extract. The ethanolic extract of flowers of Plumeria rubra was tested for its anti cancer activity against liver cancer HePG2 cell line by MTT assay. The CTC50 value of sample was 98.14μg/ml against liver cancer HePG2 cell lines. Significant results were observed thereby justifying the use of this plant in the traditional system of medicine
