Abstract
Documentation constitutes a significant, primary interface between the individual whose job tasks are impacted by computer-based applications, and the application system or software package. The MIS literature has identified documentation as a factor influencing project success, software maintenance, and application package usage. However, the professional literature has repeatedly noted the lack of adequate, meaningful documentation in practice. The development and validation of a psychological measure designed to investigate the meaning of documentation for its readers is a first step in a program of research involving the design and implementation of documentation as a factor in MIS utilization. The primary research question addressed by this study is: \"What is the nature of dimensions which readers use when evaluating application software documentation?\

Cost, benefits and quality of software development documentation

TL;DR: The systematic-mapping methodology is used to map the existing body of knowledge related to software documentation cost, benefit and quality and shows that this research area is emerging but far from mature.

Usability in computer documentation design: conceptual and methodological considerations

TL;DR: It is argued that the sampling of realistic tasks and target readers is often very difficult, particularly in a laboratory setting, and that additional emphasis must be placed on using multiple observation periods, standardized measures and materials, and multimethod assessments of usability.

Development and validation of a reader-based documentation measure

TL;DR: The development and validation of an instrument which measures seven important reader-oriented factors: credibility, demonstrative, fitness, personal affect, systematic arrangement, task relevance, and understandability is reported.

What readers mean by ' good documentation'

TL;DR: A comprehensive study that employed a semantic differential technique in the empirical assessment of documentation, showing a number of reliable, specific evaluative factors that are largely uninfluenced by demographic/situational variables.

The meaning of reading-to-do documentation

TL;DR: There are at least three principal dimensions which readers use when evaluating documentation used in the performance of job-related software tasks: task relevancy, systematic arrangement, and credibility; a nine-scale measure of these dimensions is proposed for standardized use.
