Chicago, Harvard, and the Doctrinal Foundations of Monetary Economics

TL;DR: The relationship between Friedman's monetary economics and the views espoused by Chicago and non-Chicago quantity theorists during the years 1930-36 is examined in this paper, where it is shown that Chicago economists advanced the efficacy of monetary policy as the means of escaping from the Great Depression, provided that such a policy was implemented by the use of budget deficits to generate monetary expansion.

The Rules versus Discretion Debate Over Monetary Policy in the 1920s

TL;DR: Hetzel as discussed by the authors reviewed the debate which took place in the congressional hearings on the Strong bill and pointed out that Benjamin Strong's policy was based on his belief that the Fed had the ability to influence the price level by controlling levels of bank reserves.
