L'intention des deux auteurs est de rediscuter la question, deja largement debattue par les chercheurs, de la provenance des quinze homelies In Epistulam ad Philippenses (CPG 4432) de Jean Chrysostome. Ils presentent la problematique de cette serie et evaluent son homogeneite. Il semble qu'on ne puisse precisement savoir ou furent prononcees ces homelies (Antioche ou Constantinople?). On peut affirmer que les homelies 6 et 7 ont ete prononcees devant la meme audience et si la relation entre les homelies 1 et 9 peut etre etablie, on ne peut connaitre la localisation avec certitude, mais simplement conjecturer qu'elles appartiennent a la periode antiochenne

In recent years, a significant scholarly focus has been on John Chrysostom’s appropriation of ancient psychagogy, demonstrating that he was a skilled Christian physician of the soul who sought to promote the somatic and psychological health of his congregation by proposing preaching and various ascetic disciplines as medical treatments In theses studies, however, relatively little attention has been devoted to his use of philosophical therapy in relation to almsgiving To address this, my project aims to take a closer look at Chrysostom’s view of almsgiving and soul therapy within the context of ancient philosophical therapy Ancient philosophers identified passions (πάθη), desires, and distorted thought as the diseases of the soul and developed various kinds of cognitive and behavioural remedies This thesis attempts to seek interdisciplinary research between Greco-Roman philosophy and social ethics in early Christianity, particularly in the tradition of the Greek fathers, and to pursue a givers-centered analysis which has largely been ignored in the previous receivers-oriented approach


Following an introductory chapter, the thesis is divided into three chapters Chapter 1 looks at how almsgiving heals the diseases of the soul, demonstrating that it cures the sick soul and keeps its health Chapter 2 analyses the psychagogical role of eschatology within Chrysostom’s discourse of psychic-therapeutic almsgiving As gentle and harsh therapy speeches reward and punishment arouse both hope and fear, which results in regaining the peace of the mind in harmonious combination with almsgiving The last chapter explores Chrysostom’s idea of Christinized psychic-therapeutic almsgiving The integrated horizon of Christian therapy gives a broader vision of salvation from the accomplishment of happiness to participation to a divine life


On the basis of findings from the close analysis of Chrysostom’s homiletic series on Matthew and John, this thesis argues that for Chrysostom almsgiving is one of the most powerful remedies for healing the sick souls, and the concept of Christianized soul therapy is a new key framework for understanding his approach to almsgiving and his homilies on it holistically and systematically These findings suggest that the Christianized therapy of the soul will be a vital interpretive methodology which has the potential to offer a new reading of discourse on almsgiving in late antiquity Chrysostom still gives the same message to modern audiences as he did in the past: ‘give alms and your soul will be healed’

John Chrysostom: On Almsgiving and the Therapy of the Soul

This study aims to establish the semantic range of ?????? (?faith?) in fourth century Christian discourse using the preaching of John Chrysostom as a source base. Against previous scholarship which sees ?????? as primarily a cognitive or propositional term referring to belief, this study uses a close examination of Chrysostom?s preaching to argue that the relational nature of the term was central to its significance for fourth century preaching as Christians considered their own faith and biblical texts. Chrysostom uses the reciprocal, relational character of ?????? to emphasise loyalty, trust and obedience to God through metaphors based upon the military, economic and household contexts of late antiquity. This study further shows that Chrysostom in turn uses these aspects of ?????? to seek to influence the everyday life of his congregation, whether to support existing behaviour (such as obedience to the emperor, or husbands, or the bishop) or to seek to transform behaviour (such as encouraging the rich to give to the poor, or masters to treat slaves better). This contextual understanding of ?????? therefore sheds light on how the relationship with God both informed and was informed by the everyday human relationships of the congregation. The study overall demonstrates the necessity of understanding Chrysostom?s view of ?????? as belonging within a reciprocal relationship, enabling a new view of Chrysostom?s preaching, faith and late antiquity to emerge.

The purpose of this study is a description the rhetorical structure of John Chrysostom s seventh homily on Philippians in relation to the kenosis hymn. The analysis aims to identify and characterize individual structures within the homily. This is done with a view to highlighting the delibrate usage of rhetorical argument as an instrument for biblical text analysis in the construction of Chrysostom s sermon. The study includes two sections. The first one is a theoretical introduction to St. John s style, followed by investigation into the origin of the homily. The subject matter of Chrysostom s work is also discussed. The second part of the article is a thorough description of the structure of John s text. The chapter is a detailed and systematic analysis of elements showcasing the author s rhetorical skills.

En general, on constate que Jean Chrysostome, bien que predicateur brillant et excellent exegete, insere peu d’exempla provenant de l’histoire recente dans ses homelies. Cela est d’autant plus remarquable que lorsqu’il nous donne, dans la 15e homelie sur l’epitre aux Philippiens (PG 62,294.28-295.46), une liste des malheurs qui affligent les empereurs, de Constantin a Arcadius, les exempla qu’il choisit se distinguent quelquefois fortement de la version officielle de la propagande imperiale. Cet article propose une traduction avec commentaire de cette section de la 15e homelie et vise a demontrer, par une analyse du contexte socio-politique, que Jean cherchait a satisfaire sa propre παρρησία et le gout de son audience pour le sensationnel au point de sembler ne plus etre conscient des possibles consequences politiques, en particulier celle de son exclusion de la cour, provoquee entre autres par cette revue critique des empereurs.
