The physiological interaction between host and pathogenic microorganisms in the soil starts before any actual contact occurs between root and propagule in the soil. Propagules of most soil-borne plant pathogens are in a dormant or declining physiological state until a root approaches and provides energy and nutrient for renewed growth. In a few cases pathogens are able to derive adequate energy for growth and reproduction from crop debris and other organic matter that is deposited in the soil. This latter source is of more importance in the maintenance of populations than in the incidence of infections.
