A procedure was developed to reduce premature bolting and flowering in Chinese cabbage grown in the field during the winter. This involved (a) the use of geothermic water as an inexpensive heat source for heating the transplants in the nursery; (b) application of the growth retardants daminozide (Alar) and paclobutrazol (PP333) to the heated plants before removing them to the field; and (c) application of daminozide to the plants in the field. This procedure markedly reduced stem elongation and the length of the internal stem in relation to the head without affecting the size of the head. Furthermore, application of daminozide in the field minimized the severity of tipburn, a common physiological disorder in Chinese cabbage fields. The result of such treatment was the production of high-quality Chinese cabbage heads which otherwise are unobtainable during the winter.

Inhibition of flowering in Chinese cabbage by applying heat and growth retardants to transplants

Celery (Apium graveolens L.) plants cv. Jason overwintered in a polythene tunnel flowered earlier and grew taller than similar plants given a 10-week cold-treatment at 5°C prior to transplanting in the same tunnel in mid-February. However, there was no significant difference in the yield of seeds obtained from both treatments, plants grown at a density of 4m-2 yielded less seeds than those at 2m-2, though the yield per unit area was slightly higher from the high density treatment. Treatment with 100 mgl-1 GA3 applied twice just prior to flowering and during anthesis increased flower stalk, flower pedicel and stamen length but delayed flower opening and seed ripening and decreased seed set and seed yield. Treatment with a mixture of 1000 mgl-1 GA4 and GA7 plus 1000 mgl-1 ethephon on three occasions during seed ripening decreased seed yield and reduced seed germination though those seeds capable of germinating were less dormant than seeds from untreated plants. The size distribution of seeds was unaffected by any treatment other than the preseeding spray with GA3 which reduced the percentage of medium-size seeds.

Overwintering and growth regulator treatment effects on celery (Apium graveolens L.) flowering and seed production

Celery is grown in many areas of Ege Region. Growing period and cultivation system differs according to growing region. This research was carried out to determine the effects of different plant densities and harvesting stage on yield and quality. In this research 30*60, 40*60, 50*60 cm plant densities and three harvesting stage were applied and plant height, plant weight, leaf number, petiole length, stalk diameter, yield and dry matter contents were determined. According to the results increasing plant densities and using different harvesting stages increased yield. It is possible to harvest celery in early summer months by delaying the planting date.
