The material flow system includes sources (2 to 4), sinks (5 to 7), control and data capture elements (11,12,29,34) which read identifier bar codes on transported material, transport system components (8 to 10, 13 to 20, 22 to 27) and a system control computer which acquires these inputs. The links between sources (2 to 4) and sinks (5 to 7) are monitored, and the system capacity and availability statistics are generated.
