Content analysis can be a particularly suitable method for measuring cognitive variables from archived texts. Although content analysis has been underused by clinical psychologists, there are many benefits to this strategy. Longitudinal studies can be conducted retrospectively, the range of possible research participants can be expanded to include individuals otherwise unavailable (e.g., the famous or the dead), existing data sets can be used and reused to answer new questions, and studies across cultures and across levels of analysis (individual vs. group) can be facilitated. To illustrate the use and usefulness of content analysis to measure cognitive variables, the authors focus on the examples of causal attributions and integrative complexity, describing past research and sketching future applications to clinical research and practice.

The Paragraph Completion Test has become the most widely used measure of the integrative component of conceptual complexity: namely, the ability to think in multi-conceptual terms about given stimulus domains. The test has consistently predicted complex behavioral performance in experimental settings and correlates positively with theoretically related measures of personality and cognition. Inter-rater, split-half, and preliminary test-retest reliability coefficients are also satisfactory, making the test a psychometrically sound and valid measure of complexity.

Basic career needs, management tasks, objectives, human development rationale, and implementation strategies for a career development education program are discussed in terms of the Minnesota Career Development Curriculum (CDC) project. Oriented toward teachers and counselors, the document contains six chapters: (1) The Challenge, presenting an overview of career oriented education in terms of the interrelationships between school, society, the labor market, the future, and students; (2) In Touch with Reality, discussing socioeconomic and cultural values and career expectations held by the general population and their implications for counselors; (3) Forecast of the Future, viewing future technological and economic changes in terms of present labor market conditions, occupational patterns, and educational requirements; (4) A Conceptual System for Career Development Education, elaborating on a conceptual structure for the definition and development of career development education; (5) A Process Curriculum for Career Management, presenting the CDC as a process model focusing on a sequence of personal competencies (career management tasks) to be mastered in four steps of the student's development; (6) Strategies and Resources for Implementation, discussing delivery systems and resources.
