TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the influence of corporate governance and regulations on bank risk-taking behavior and found sufficient evidence that corporate governance mechanism has strong effect on the level of risk taken by bank: bank with large owner(s) is associated with higher risk taking, while board size is negatively related to bank risk level.

Corporate governance mechanisms and firm financial performance in Nigeria

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used a pooled ordinary least squares regression analysis for a sample of 93 firms quoted on the Nigerian Stock Exchange for the period 1996-1999, and found no evidence to support the idea that boards with a higher proportion of outside directors perform better than other firms, but there is evidence that expatriate CEOs tend to achieve higher levels of performance than those run by indigenous CEOs.

Governance and Performance of Microfinance Institutions in Central and Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the first evidence on the impact of governance on outreach and sustainability of microfinance institutions in Central and Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States, finding that performance-based compensation of managers is not associated with better-performing micro-finance organizations; lower wages suggested for mission-driven organizations worsen outreach, while managers' experience improves performance.

Board diversity and its effects on bank performance: An international analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of board diversity (gender and nationality) on performance in banks was analyzed by making use of a sample of 159 banks in nine countries during the period 2004-2010, and empirical evidence showed that gender diversity increases bank performance while national diversity inhibits it.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the effect of Shari'ah supervision boards, board structure and CEO power on performance during the period 2005-2011, and found that the impact of board structure (board size, board independence, board size and board independence), CEO power (CEO-chair duality and internally recruited CEO) on performance of Islamic banks is overall negative.
