Structure Development during Shear Flow-Induced Crystallization of i-PP: In-Situ Small-Angle X-ray Scattering Study
Rajesh H. Somani,Benjamin S. Hsiao,Aurora Nogales,Srivatsan Srinivas,Andy H. Tsou,Igors Sics,F. J. Baltá-Calleja,Tiberio A. Ezquerra +7 more
TL;DR: In this paper, small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) was used to follow orientation-induced crystallization of isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) in the subcooled melt at 140 °C after step shear under isothermal conditions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Flow-induced shish kebab precursor structures in entangled polymer melts
TL;DR: In this article, a detailed review of the factors that affect the shish-kebab formation in entangled polymer melts are systematically reviewed, including the concept of coil-stretch transition, chain dynamics, critical orientation molecular weight, phase transition during shish and kebab formations.
Journal ArticleDOI
Structure Development during Shear Flow Induced Crystallization of i-PP: In Situ Wide-Angle X-ray Diffraction Study
Rajesh H. Somani,Benjamin S. Hsiao,Aurora Nogales,Hitesh Fruitwala,Srivatsan Srinivas,Andy H. Tsou +5 more
TL;DR: In situ synchrotron wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) was used to monitor crystallization of isotactic polypropylene (i-PP) in the subcooled melt at 140 °C after step shear as discussed by the authors.

Shear-Mediated Crystallization of Isotactic Polypropylene: The Role of Long Chain−Long Chain Overlap
TL;DR: In this article, the role of long chains in shear-induced oriented crystallization was studied by in situ rheo-optical measurements and ex situ microscopic observations, and it was shown that long chain overlap is enhanced by long chain−long chain overlap.
Journal ArticleDOI
Influence of shear on polypropylene crystallization: morphology development and kinetics
TL;DR: In this article, the effect of shear on the crystallization kinetics and morphology of polypropylene has been studied and a model valid for PP crystallization under quiescent conditions was extended to include shear-induced crystallization by linking the extra number of activated nuclei observed after shear treatment to the first normal stress difference.

Kinetics of Phase Change. I General Theory
TL;DR: In this paper, the theory of phase change is developed with the experimentally supported assumptions that the new phase is nucleated by germ nuclei which already exist in the old phase, and whose number can be altered by previous treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Kinetics of Phase Change. II Transformation‐Time Relations for Random Distribution of Nuclei
TL;DR: In this article, a relation between the actual transformed volume V and a related extended volume V1 ex is derived upon statistical considerations, and a rough approximation to this relation is shown to lead, under the proper conditions, to the empirical formula of Austin and Rickett.

Granulation, Phase Change, and Microstructure Kinetics of Phase Change. III
TL;DR: In this paper, a comprehensive description of the phenomena of phase change may be summarized in Phase Change, Grain Number and Microstructure Formulas or Diagrams, giving, respectively, the transformed volume, grain, and microstructure densities as a function of time, temperature, and other variables.

Rate of Nucleation in Condensed Systems
D. Turnbull,J. C. Fisher +1 more
TL;DR: On the basis of the nucleation theory developed by Volmer, Becker, and co-workers, and the theory of absolute reaction rates, an expression for the absolute rate of nucleation in condensed systems was derived in this paper.
