Computerspiele sind popular, so viel ist klar. Jedenfalls, wenn man den Begriff mit ‚weitverbreitet‘ oder ‚massentauglich‘ ubersetzt. Denn ohne Zweifel finden sie sich langst nicht mehr nur in Millionen von Kinderzimmern, sondern haben mit der Etablierung bei einem U-30 Publikum mittlerweile sogar die Adelung erhalten, Gegenstand wissenschaftlicher Forschung, der so genannten Ludologie oder Game Studies zu sein (vgl. Aarseth 1997; Kucklich 2001). Wenn man es sich jedoch ein wenig komplizierter machen und systemtheoretisch analysieren mochte, welche Funktion das Populare hat, mag man zu dem Ergebnis kommen, dass das Populare der personalen Inklusion in Funktionssysteme dient (vgl. Staheli 2004). Mit einem solchen Definitionsversuch wird es dann allerdings schon schwieriger das Populare am Gaming zu beschreiben. Denn zur Teilnahme an welchem Funktionssystem sollte das Gaming animieren? Die Frage, was aus systemtheoretischer Perspektive das Populare am Gaming ist, wird daher aus Grunden der Komplexitatsreduktion zuruckgestellt. Stattdessen soll zunachst gefragt werden, warum eine bestimmte Sorte von Bildschirmspielen — narrative Spiele bzw. Spiele mit narrativen Anteilen -, bei denen die korperliche Involvierung in Form von massivem Daumeneinsatz gar nicht im Vordergrund steht, so popular im Sinne von ‚weitverbreitet‘ ist. Das heist, um mich der Frage nach der Funktion popularer Kommunikation zu nahern, gehe ich einen Umweg uber die Frage, was das Gaming dem Individuum zu bieten hat.

One of the most widely circulating stories of medieval Europe is set in motion by the threat of father-daughter incest. This threat, leveled at a virtuous, beautiful, and long-suffering heroine, unleashes a series ofmarital adventures that dramatize the advantages and perils of exogamy. The basic structure ofthe tale is as follows: A king eidier promises his dying wife or vows after her death diat he will remarry only ifhe can find someone as beautiful as his beloved wife. The only viable candidate who closely resembles the deceased wife is their only child, a daughter. To avoid the incestuous union the princess cuts off one or both ofher hands (in the case ofbodi hands, she has a servant perform the maiming). The king orders her to be killed, but, instead, she is abandoned in a forest or set adrift at sea. She is found by anodier nobleman who marries her despite her mutilation and the objections of his mother. The heroine gives birth to a son when her husband is absent and the modier-in-law forges letters to and from the absent husband, first announcing the birth of a monster or a black child insinuating that she is an adulteress and then ordering the execution ofmother and child. The handless princess is once again abandoned or set adrift. The husband returns, punishes his mother, and, after a long search, finds his wife, whose hands have been miraculously reattached. Throughout the Middle Ages, many variants of the "Flight from the Incestuous Father/Handless Maiden" story circulated in different genres and languages, transmitted through oral folktale, hagiographie legend, verse romance, and prose fiction. The first known written version, the English Vitae Duorum Offarum, appeared in the diirteenth century. The story often converged widi other widespread tale-types,

Al 25 jaar ben ik gefascineerd door verhalen. Tijdens mijn afwisselende loopbaan als predikant, docent in het volwassenenonderwijs, leraar Engels, en nu gerontoloog, ben ik onder de indruk geraakt van het verklarend vermogen van de narrative root metaphor (Sarbin, 1986), ofwel het narratief als fundamentele analogie om de wereld te begrijpen. Behalve het leiden van workshops voor een breed publiek over het concept van het leven als een verhaal, geef ik ook les in Narratieve gerontologie aan een kleine liberal arts universiteit (een brede bacheloropleiding) in de Verenigde Staten. Tijdens deze activiteiten valt me telkens weer op hoe verhalen verheldering kunnen bieden, niet alleen bij de vergeten ‘innerlijke kant’ van het ouder worden – op zichzelf al een hele prestatie – maar ook bij talloze andere onderbelichte aspecten van het leven van alledag. Daarnaast valt me een eigenaardig fenomeen op.
