TLDR
A diagram of metabolism during fluoroacetic acid action is proposed which shows a bypass of the aconitase step and the possibility of an oxidative ATP-production at a low rate.

Physiological responses of insects to heat

TL;DR: Models of thermal damage leading to the death of the insect are discussed as well as current studies in describing the events of thermal death, among the most studied responses of insects to heat.
Book ChapterDOI

Relationship between Cold Hardiness and Diapause

TL;DR: This chapter argues thatcold hardiness can be achieved independently of diapause, but cold hardiness is often a component of the diappause syndrome and the expression of diAPause frequently extends the insect’s capacity to cold harden.

Environmental physiology and biochemistry of insects.

TL;DR: Environmental Aspects of Insect Dormancy and Insect Development and Metabolic Energy Expenditure and Its Hormonal Regulation and Water and Salt Relations are studied.

Biochemistry of Cryoprotectants

TL;DR: The role of polyhydric alcohols in cryoprotection is probably the most extensively studied feature of insect cold hardiness as mentioned in this paper, and the importance of glycerol as a cryoprocessant was first recognized by R. W. Salt after he and others linked the presence of high levels of polyols with winter hibernation, diapause, or freezing survival.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cold-shock injury and rapid cold-hardening in the flesh fly, Sarcophaga crassipalpis.

TL;DR: The rapid increase in cold tolerance correlates with concomitant increases in hemolymph osmolality and glycerol levels, which suggests a novel role for glycersol in protecting insects against injury resulting from cold shock, although other unidentified mechanisms may be involved in this response.

Pyruvate carboxylase. i. nature of the reaction.

TL;DR: The direct carboxylation of pyruvate to oxaloacetate (WoodWerkman reaction) was postulated more than 25 years ago as a probable mechanism for the formation of dicarboxylic acids by CO% fixation and studies of the intracellular distribution of the pertinent enzymes suggested that neither of the previously considered pathways for the Formation of phosphoenolpyruvates could be responsible for the observed results with mitochondria.

Spectrophotometric determination of protein concentration in cell extracts containing tRNA's and rRNA's

TL;DR: The concentration of proteins in solutions or cell-free extracts contaminated by tRNA's or rRNA's can be simply, rapidly, and accurately determined by measuring the absorbance at 2285 and 2345 A, two wavelengths where the absorption due to ribonucleic acids is identical so that their interference can be eliminated.
