Journal ArticleDOI
Can we agree on an ecological classification of subterranean animals
TL;DR: After a review of historic classifications, standardized definitions of the most widely used terms are proposed and four categories are proposed which are terminological approximations of the classic Schiner‐Racovitza terminology.
Journal ArticleDOI
A genetic classification of sinkholes illustrated from evaporite paleokarst exposures in Spain
TL;DR: In this paper, a new genetic classification of sinkholes applicable to both carbonate and evaporite karst areas is proposed, with the exception of solution dolines, by use of two terms that refer to the material affected by downward gravitational movements (cover, bedrock or caprock).
Journal ArticleDOI
Spheres of discharge of springs
TL;DR: In this paper, 12 spheres of discharge of springs are defined, sketched, displayed with photographs, and described relative to their hydrogeology of occurrence, and the microhabitats and ecosystems they support.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification, prediction, and mitigation of sinkhole hazards in evaporite karst areas
TL;DR: Sinkhole identification, investigation, prediction, and mitigation using field surveys and geomorphological mapping combined with accounts from local people and historical sources is studied in this paper, where detailed sinkhole maps can be constructed from sequential historical maps, recent topographical maps, and digital elevation models (DEMs) complemented with building-damage surveying, remote sensing, and high-resolution geodetic surveys.

The mid-latitude biodiversity ridge in terrestrial cave fauna
David C. Culver,Louis Deharveng,Anne Bedos,Julian J. Lewis,Molly K. Madden,James R. Reddell,Boris Sket,Peter Trontelj,Denis White +8 more
TL;DR: It is hypothesize that a ridge (ca 42°–46° in Europe and 34° in North America) of high biodiversity occurs in temperate areas of high productivity and cave density, which may reflect a strong dependence of cave communities on long term surface productivity.
