In this article, the work of art is conceived as a sign which is, in all but the simplest limit case, itself a structure of signs, and the problem then becomes that of stating the differentia of the esthetic sign, such differentia may be found either in the kind of things which function as esthetic signs or in objects which are designated, or (as will here be suggested) in a combi

The Verbal Icon: Studies in the Meaning of Poetry

TL;DR: Wimsatt's assumption is that practice and theory of both the past and the present are integrally related-that there is a continuity in the materials of criticism-that a person who studies poetry today has a critical concern, not merely a historical interest, in what Aristotle or Plato said about poetry as mentioned in this paper.

Food labels: Do consumers perceive what semiotics want to convey?

TL;DR: In this article, a multidisciplinary approach was applied to answer the question: do consumers perceive what semiotics want to convey? The idea behind was to determine if consumers’ expectations and associations raised by simulated yogurt labels, designed with different sign combinations frequently applied in commercial products, were in agreement with results from a semiotic analysis, and to check for cultural differences, comparing results from two Spanish-speaking countries (Spain and Uruguay).

Rene Wellek, +1 more
TL;DR: Theory of Literature and Methodology of Literary Study as mentioned in this paper is a book which, so far as we know, lacks any close parallel, and it is not a textbook introducing the young to the elements of literary appreciation nor (like Morize's Aims and Methods) a survey of the techniques employed in scholarly research.
