Estimation of Theoretically Plausible Demand Functions from U.S. Consumer Expenditure Survey Data

TLDR
The estimation of demand systems in which the demand equations satisfy all of the restrictions of neoclassical theory of demand has long been considered a triumph of applied econometrics, for the resulting equations both honor the budget constraint and are consistent with an underlying (usually ordinal) utility function as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract
The estimation of demand systems in which the demand equations satisfy all of the restrictions of neoclassical theory of demand has long been considered a triumph of applied econometrics, for the resulting equations both honor the budget constraint and are consistent with an underlying (usually ordinal) utility function. Many such “theoretically plausible” systems are represented in the literature, ranging from simple linear expenditure equations to systems embodying exotic Gorman polar forms. Unlike in Chapter 6, the analysis of this chapter is confined to data sets that pool across the four quarters of 1996.

The new science of pleasure: consumer choice behavior and the measurement of well-being

TL;DR: This article surveyed the origins of consumer choice theory and recent developments in consumer behavior and well-being, and reviewed the newer evidence on consumer behavior, and what this implies for measuring consumer choice behavior.

The Analysis of Household Surveys : A Microeconometric Approach to Development Policy

Angus Deaton
TL;DR: Deaton as mentioned in this paper reviewed the analysis of household survey data, including the construction of household surveys, the econometric tools useful for such analysis, and a range of problems in development policy for which this survey analysis can be applied.

An Almost Ideal Demand System

TL;DR: The Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) as mentioned in this paper is a first-order approximation of the Rotterdam and translog models, which has been used to test the homogeneity and symmetry restrictions of demand analysis.

Theory and Measurement

TL;DR: In this article, a theory of the foundations of measurement is proposed, which emphasises the empirical process of making measurements and the notion of error in the process of measurement, and the connection between a scientific theory and the results which support it.
