European wind atlas

TLDR
The aim of the European Wind Atlas is to establish the meteorological basis for the assessment of wind energy resources as mentioned in this paper, and the main objective is to provide suitable data for evaluating the potential wind energy output from large electricity producing wind turbine installations.
Abstract
The aim of the European Wind Atlas is to establish the meteorological basis for the assessment of wind energy resources. The main objective is to provide suitable data for evaluating the potential wind energy output from large electricity producing wind turbine installations. In addition, the Wind Atlas provides data and guidelines for the meteorological aspects of the detailed siting of large and small wind turbines. The EUROPEAN WIND ATLAS IS: A DATA BANK of European Wind climate. It contains comprehensive statistics from more than 200 meteorological stations covering the intire EC - plus colour maps of the wind resources of each country in the EC. The statistical data are given also on a diskette for use with IBM compatible PC's. A HANDBOOK for regional wind resource assessment, and the local siting of wind turbines - including guidelines with computational procedures for the effects of shelter from buildings and other obstacles, the effects of varying surface roughnesses, and for the influence of hills and mountains on the wind climate and on the local wind power resources. A METHODOLOGY description. The computational procedures employed for the analysis of the meteorological data are described in full. These methods have applications for all parts of the world. The computer codes are available separately in the form of the Wind Atlas analysis and Application (PC-) Programme (WAsP). (author).

Renewable and Efficient Electric Power Systems

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an overview of the early history of the electric power industry, including the early pioneers of the electrical power industry and the development of the modern electric power system.
Journal ArticleDOI

Analytical modelling of wind speed deficit in large offshore wind farms

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a model for the wind speed deficit in wind farms and extended it to include both small and large wind farms extending over large areas, and the model handles a regular array geometry with straight rows of wind turbines and equidistant spacing between units in each row.
Journal ArticleDOI

Assessing the impacts of wind farms on birds

TL;DR: The potential effects of the proposed increase in wind energy developments on birds are explored using information from studies of existing wind farms, and the requirements for assessing the impact of future developments are summarized.

Does community ownership affect public attitudes to wind energy? A case study from south-west Scotland

TL;DR: The results of a study of public attitudes to onshore windfarm development in south-west Scotland is presented in this article, where the authors explore the influences of different development models on attitudes to windfarms by comparing public attitudes towards a community-owned windfarm on the Isle of Gigha with attitudes towards several developer-owned on the adjacent Kintyre peninsula.
