Friction and wear behaviour of acetal and nylon gears

TLDR
In this paper, an extensive investigation of polymer gear (acetal and nylon) friction and wear behavior was presented. But the most interesting observation from the experimental work is the significant difference in wear behaviour when running acteal against nylon gears, especially the low wear rate when acetal is used as the driver gear.

Tribological behavior of selected engineering polymers under rolling contact

TL;DR: In this article, the rolling wear behavior of polyamide 6, polyoxymethylene and polyetheretherketone materials was investigated using different wear testing rigs, in which a steel ball rolls on the polymer plate surface in a rotational or linear motion.

An investigation on the thermal and wear behavior of polymer based spur gears

TL;DR: In this paper, the potential of three different thermoplastic materials viz. Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), and Polyoxymethylene(POM) to be used in plastic gearing applications is investigated.

An accelerated multilevel test and design procedure for polymer gears

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a new accelerated testing procedure for plastic gears that is based on several different levels of testing, and the iterative testing procedure fulfils requests from the product development process.

Polymer gear surface thermal wear and its performance prediction

TL;DR: In this paper, an approach for gear transition torque prediction based on the link between polymer gear wear rate and its surface temperature has been proposed and this method is related to test results under different operating speeds and gear geometries.

Polymer spur gears behaviors under different loading conditions: A review:

TL;DR: In this paper, the significance of polymer gears to transmit power and motion is increasing continuously due to their inherent characteristics, and polymer gears have established themselves as attractive alternatives to conventional gears.

The friction and lubrication of solids

TL;DR: Tabor and Bowden as mentioned in this paper reviewed the many advances made in this field during the past 36 years and outlined the achievements of Frank Philip Bowden, and reviewed the behavior of non-metals, especially elastomers; elastohydrodynamic lubrication; and the wear of sliding surfaces.

The temperature of rubbing surfaces

J.F. Archard
- 01 Oct 1959 -
TL;DR: In this article, a simple formulation of flash temperature theory is given, which reduces the mathematical complexities and instead emphasises the relevant physical considerations, and the use of the theory is illustrated by some new experimental results on the breakdown of Perspex and the wear of steels.
Journal ArticleDOI

The flash temperature concept

TL;DR: A survey of the history of the flash temperature concept and its application in the design of rubbing components that are prone to scuffing can be found in this paper, along with an outline of the theory that is based on this concept and formulas for calculating flash temperatures.

A new approach for polymer composite gear design

TL;DR: In this article, a new design method for polymer composite gear has been proposed based on the link between polymer gear wear rate and its surface temperature, which has been found from the tests that the polymer (acetal) gear wear ratio will be increased dramatically when the load reaches a critical value for a specific geometry.
