TLDR
It is suggested that CMS exhibit superior physical performance characteristics than CFS, in relation to both the lower and upper body, and strength and conditioning practitioners should implement a structured and periodized program to facilitate strength qualities that underpin surfing performance for all participants.
Abstract
Parsonage, JR, Secomb, JL, Tran, TT, Farley, ORL, Nimphius, S, Lundgren, L, and Sheppard, JM. Gender differences in physical performance characteristics of elite surfers. J Strength Cond Res 31(9): 2417-2422, 2017-The purpose of this study was to describe and compare the gender differences in physical performance characteristics of elite surfers. Twenty competitive female surfers (CFS) and 20 competitive male surfers (CMS) performed a battery of physical performance tests: squat jump (SJ), isometric midthigh pull (IMTP), 15-m sprint paddle, and 400-m endurance paddle during a single testing session. All performance measures were significantly different between CFS and CMS (p < 0.01). Specifically, CMS produced greater peak force production (28.5%) and jumped higher (27.7%) in the SJ and produced greater normalized peak force during the IMTP (18.9%) compared with CFS. For paddling performance, CMS were faster over 5, 10, and 15 m (12.4%, 9.7%, and 10.9%), possessed a higher peak paddling velocity (11.3%), and recorded faster paddle times over 400 m (11.8%). The results of this study suggest that CMS exhibit superior physical performance characteristics than CFS, in relation to both the lower and upper body. Strength and conditioning practitioners should therefore implement a structured and periodized program to facilitate strength qualities that underpin surfing performance for all participants, but as highlighted in the current investigation, female surfers may have a greater window for adaptation and therefore vast benefit of targeting their underdeveloped physical qualities.

A review of the reliability of biomechanical variables produced during the isometric mid-thigh pull and isometric squat and the reporting of normative data.

TL;DR: A narrative review aims to evaluate studies that have researched the reliability and/or reported normative data for both isometric mid-thigh pull and isometric squat, demonstrating that peak force is the most reliable measure and can be used to determine maximum strength capabilities.

Physical performance characteristics between male and female youth surfing athletes.

TL;DR: It seems that Star Excursion Balance Test can be a time efficiency indicator of the influence of surf training on the magnitude of lower limb asymmetry and postural control, in this way, surf coaches working with young athletes can implement appropriate and adjust training interventions.

Essential Skills for Superior Wave-Riding Performance: A Systematic Review.

TL;DR: Findings from the studies included in this review suggest that the pop-up and landing exhibit trainable qualities that coaches and athletes can use to improve surfing performance.

Can we predict the landing performance of simulated aerials in surfing

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explored which technical and physical attributes could predict superior and/or safe landing performance when surfers performed variations of a simulated aerial task, and found that technical attributes were associated with superior performance when compared to physical attributes.

Riding to the top – A systematic review on multidimensional performance indicators in surfing:

TL;DR: Findings suggest that a few performance indicators exist in relation to associations between physical capacities and surfing skill, and that relative arm span seems to be beneficial to surfing performance and discriminates between differently skilled surfers.

Self-efficacy: toward a unifying theory of behavioral change.

TL;DR: An integrative theoretical framework to explain and to predict psychological changes achieved by different modes of treatment is presented and findings are reported from microanalyses of enactive, vicarious, and emotive mode of treatment that support the hypothesized relationship between perceived self-efficacy and behavioral changes.

A Simple Sequentially Rejective Multiple Test Procedure

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple and widely accepted multiple test procedure of the sequentially rejective type is presented, i.e. hypotheses are rejected one at a time until no further rejections can be done.
