TL;DR: An overview of GIS adoption in relation to type of local authority and geographical location is provided and it is demonstrated that take-up has been most pronounced in the larger authorities, particularly in the southern part of Great Britain.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the findings of research into the implementation and use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Italian local authority planning departments, and suggest that the view of GIS as a "tool" for more rational decision-making, and increased efficiency and effectiveness, may be particularly inappropriate in countries in which these values do not receive high priority.
